So I bought a used Central Machinery mortising machine and it didn’t have the chuck key with it. I figured I could go to Harbor Freight and just pick up another one, or at least call them and get one. They do have one available for sale through their parts department, but it seems a bit pricey with the shipping (ended up being almost $20). The ones in-store don’t fit (not even the 4-way key they sell. I asked my local store if I could see or they would sell me the one from the display, and that led nowhere either. The parts dept. is giving me the run around on telling me what size it is. The sales dept. did the pressure thing where they kept telling me they were running low on stock and I better buy one from them before hanging up. No info from them either. Anyone know by any chance what size chuck key it is? Where else can I pick up a key for this thing? I have an older model but the chuck looks identical to the ones they have on display right now.

Thanks in advance!

Hi coach, I did not. I figured it wouldn’t work since the the depth is so small. I didn’t think it would reach inside the machine. Did you take it off the ratchet and use it that way? I’ll take a look at it next time I go in. Thanks. Do you know what size it is by chance?

I do not know the size but it works . I use it with the ratchet. It is the bigger of the 2 sizes I had the manager take it out of the package and try it before I bought it..

Ok, so in case anyone else is curious about this here is what I got to work.

The key that comes with this 1/2” Jacobs Keyed Chuck from HF works perfectly and was cheaper than buying the key alone from HF’s parts department. As a bonus I get a chuck to use later on if I need it. Hope this helps someone.

Here we are years later, I am in the same boat looking for a key from that era of machine. Thanks for the help my friend.

No problem! Hope they haven’t changed it up since then.
