This is the second time I have been eyeing a major tool purchase from Grizzly late in the year to early the next year and have been burned by sharp price increases in January. Several years ago it was a 17” bandsaw that jumped probably 200+ bucks at the new year. Instead bought a Rikon. Now, I’ve been eyeing a G0656P 8” jointer for several months and I guess I should have known better. Price increased about $150 on January 1st. Any thoughts? I’m not sure I have an alternative in the 8” jointer category. I will be watching craigslist closer I suppose.

This is grizzly’s 30 year anniversary, so I bet they have a special sale sometime this year.

The catalogs don’t have the 5% coupon on the back because i’m guessing they’ll email out a special one.

I’m waiting to pull the trigger on the g0513×2.

I’ll post updates if I hear of anything.

Well they do have sales as mentioned. Hold out til a sale. I’d imagine price increases are with everyone

Though their prices do often go up at the new year, the price increase seems sharper because you were looking at their winter sale prices, which run through Nov and Dec. The winter sale is indeed the best time to pull the trigger on a Grizzly machine, though the summer sale comes pretty close as well.

They had it posted on their home page that those prices ended on 12/31, so its really no surprise. On a side note, you may want to consider the 0490. I just got a dud for a 656 and they didn’t inspire confidence when talking about the 656.

Fair enough. Interesting about your 656 experience, but the 0490 is way out of my price range. What do you mean by “they didn’t inspire confidence ….” customer service or the tool you got?

A lot of prices for various items from hardware to food went up here in St. Louis the beginning of this month. First of the month, first of the year would seem to be a likely time for price increases. Also Grizzly was running a Christmas sale which I assume would end at the end of December (but I have not checked).

I was surprised when I got my ‘13 catalog with no coupon code. Hopefully something good is in the works for sales.

Alan -

Here is a write up on the 656P I recently received:

UPS is actually picking it up today and delivering the 0490.

I guess to add a bit more detail on what I mentioned to you is that I felt very uncomfortable with the tech telling me that he hoped this was an isolated incident and not and indication of a bad batch.

There was also some talk as to whether the difference between the polar bear series and regular was paint vs powdercoat. I would make sure to ask that before making an order myself. Good luck w/ the purchase which ever route you decide to go!

The next Grizzly sale won’t be until May.

From my chat with Grizzly Customer Service:

I am sorry, we are not holding any sales at this time. Our next sale will be our Spring sale which will start sometime in May 2013

I’m almost willing to bet that this year’s sales events will be the lightest they have had in years, with the least amount of 1st grade merchandise. The company has to try and stay competitive while projecting out for a whole year on that catalog. So far, 2013 is shaping up to be one of the most unstable years in quite a while. Interest rates on housing are already up about half a point, and most food is expected to rise at least 10% due to last years bad corn crop. Gas has been back on the rise for all of 2013. Grizzly’s medical plan alone might be enough to make them wish they had never put that catalog out.
The way the economy and our government is going, I think 2013 will be our first year for some big time inflation, which in the 3rd and 4th quarter of this year could make that 2013 Grizzly catalog look like a real bargain.

I see all these comments about no coupon on the back of the catalog. My catalog just arrived yesterday and there was a 5% off coupon code on it. Weird

Not sure if they included the coupon because it was my first catalog from them or what.
