Topic tags/keywords: black and decker sawcat vintage classic

Original box included. S/N on the tool itself reads “0340984” while on the box it says “268030.”

Also, the box itself appears to be from at least the summer of ‘69 (sorry, Bryan Adams) since the model number reads “7372” with the former model number “U338” below in parentheses. The saw itself carries the older model number, making the tool slightly older than the box it was packaged in. Some things just don’t match. The correct saw would carry the model #7372-10 and the serial #0268030.

(box – note newer model #7372 above older model #U338 and different SN of #0268030)

(model #U338, type B, serial #0340984 – doesn’t match the info on the box)

I also wanted to add that the 7372 would have a double insulated motor which also means a 2-prong plug rather than the 3-prong one typical of most commercial power tools.

Later versions of the U33x series (after 1967-68) would have a black painted metal handle, whereas the 7370-10, 7371-10 and 7372-10 would use a dark gray plastic version of that same handle.

Here is a SAWCAT 986 for comparison. It is a type AA unit. Has the plastic handle.

Here’s its household equivalent, the U336, type D. Still a bare metal handle, but the tool specifications are moved from the motor to the shoe.
