Topic tags/keywords: question tip live oak finishes bird bath

Looking’ for finishing advice!

I finished this with spar varnish. It holds up the the weather OK, but the birds don’t seem to like it (although my neighbors do). Wondering it is the residual smell of the varnish.
Anyone with a suggestion for an alternative finish?

I’m assuming you let it ‘cure’ for a week or two first? Maybe use epoxy instead. I don’t think it has an odor, but birds don’t taste stuff anyway. That’s why you can add cayenne pepper to your bird seed to deter the squirrels. Maybe the way to go is to get rid of the center raised area and use whatever sized plastic flower pot saucer that fits in it. This will be a better help for cleaning anyway. We always have to scrub ours with a brush and I don’t think the poly will hold up to that.

Most birds do not smell. Vultures being an exception. It may be that the surface is slippery.

I guess the real test would be to add another type of bird bath next to it and see if the choose that one.
