Hey folks, I’m on the hunt for a bandsaw since my neighbor who lets me use his is going to be selling his house soon.

I was eyeing the Laguna 1412 bandsaw at about $1500 new since there isn’t much for used Bandsaws within 500 miles of me (Midwest US). However, I just saw a Shop Fox W1729 19 inch bandsaw become available used for $1500. Obviously it’s comparing a 14 inch to a 19 inch bandsaw but I’d love your thoughts on what might work well for resawing, ripping, crosscutting, and pattern cutting that I do on my neighbors current 14 inch Delta bandsaw.

Harvey C-14 – $1700 new, 14” rating, but 3 HP. Awesome value and power at a good price point. I had been looking for the past year – nothing good used (mid-Atlantic) and reasonably priced. I was about to get the Grizzly 17” but “switched and saved” several hundred and went from 2 to 3HP. I don’t resaw anything large, so 14” was enough for the hobby work I do. I think it’s $1799 now, but I got it on sale at $1699 in November. I called and they said they rotate items on sale every few days. so it pays to watch their website and grab it at the lowest price. (They also said they would honor prices for 5 days – YMMV.)

My neighbor came over when it was delivered and as a retired woodworker, was really impressed with the quality and features. Reinforced that it was the right decision. :)

The Shop Fox seems overkill, but $1500 isn’t bad for that saw if it’s in good condition. If you want to go new, I can highly recommend the Grizzly G0513X2. But that is going to be in the $2200 range new once you factor in shipping and a mobile base, which really starts to make the 19” Shop Fox much more attractive. I can’t comment on the Harvey like Glenn did, but I do have their Alpha table saw, and I can say they make some awesome tools. Good luck with your search.

Thanks Glenn and Chris for your advice.

I went to check out the W1729 and found that it was brand new. The guy only used it once and then decided not to use it to make the trim for his house like he was planning. It then sat for a few years and he decided to sell it. So everything looks great and unused on it. I bought it because after factoring in tax and shipping on other models like Harvey’s C-14, $1500 ended up being a great deal. I do agree that a 19” is overkill but since it’s the same price as the 14” ones I was looking at, I figured I might as well try it and can always resell it if I want to.

The guides on the W1729 are unlike ones I’ve seen before so I’ll have to figure them out. I also think the run capacitor is bad but other than that, it looks great.

I think you got a great deal. As for the overkill part…is there such a thing?????
