Why, when dimensional lumber comes in the 1/2” increments did they not just add the extra half inch so that we could plane a 14” wide piece of lumber?

Dimension lumber tops out at 12”.

Gotta stop somewhere. If they had added an extra 1/2”, someone would ask why not another.

It’s 13” because that lets you plane a 12” board. If you need to plane something wider, get a bigger planer.
