My question is. I'm out of wood for my dining room table to make the legs. I'm using oak that's been in the barn for years and has worm holes thru out. I love this wood but I'm out except for some 4×6 .
So can I plane these down to 2 3/4"x 2 3/4" and taper these without them bowing or twisting. Thanks
Check the worm holes carefully and make sure that they are not from powder post beetles. You DO NOT want to bring those into your house. PPB holes are pretty small and if there is any fine powder-like saw dust on the wood at all, I would not risk it. PPB can infest any wood in your home.
Yes you can, but I would get close on my table saw 1st.
One inch cut and flip, raise the blade another inch and repeat. To get the 6" side it will end up as a maximum cut, but each pass will only be that inch thick. Then joint and plane square.
Maybe get them to around 3X3 on the table saw.
