I just got a notification that I have new activity details on a site I’ve never visited.

Somebody, referring to me by my PK handle, says I’m a member of this: ”Craftisian” website. This was received in my regular email. NFW!
So I went there, and found it is an old forum, formerly known as “Woodworking Web.com” Nope, I don’t think I ever signed up for that, because I was not really a friend of Martin Sojka. Lumberjocks who have been here a long time will remember Martin as the original modulator here.

I just wanna unsubscribe. Can’t figure out how. Anybody else?

I’m a member there. Maybe someone is spoofing you? It shows you as a member but having done nothing. You can unsubscribe within your email account, I believe.

I just know that it’s kind of cool that I am now able to wrap my own Christmas presents and still be surprised. Hardy har har. Sorry PK, I’m on my second scotch on a Friday. :)

I’ve been getting their spam weekly notices for more than a year. Suddenly showed up one day in my inbox saying I had signed up. Nope. The only way to unsubscribe is to sign in. Not going to give them confirmation of my email. Goes directly to my spam folder and I delete every now and then.

Recently I started getting daily emails from them. I checked it out. I didn’t recognize it but apparently I joined them ages ago. I logged on using an old User ID and PW I used to use on different wood forums. I’m guessing that they are reaching out to inactive members.

You can unsubscribe, I’ve done that but I’d much prefer to remove my name altogether. Couldn’t find a way to do that, nor can you contact the web gods there.

Thanks, Kevin, I see you’ve been there too. I’d have to log in to my FB account in order to unsubscribe, despite never visiting the site in the first place. The only logical explanation is that Sojka used my LJ account details to try and make me join his newer website, which failed to launch years ago.

Ty, Robert, noted above.

Might be legit or maybe not.

A forum owner has access to the master user database, and can easily make a copy to load into a new website.

If a user list was compromised, the emails will usually redirect to fake alternate site. So as long as you log into new site directly and not a link inside an email; should be safe to visit.

User databases are also easily to filter, to help nefarious site owner from being obvious with pilfering. One could sort the list to only keep the most prolific users, or experts making prolific posts in certain wood working skills or tools. Could also be as simple as transferring users that had email direct contact, and a legitimate reason to store your email address and send an invite.

Considering that these emails are suddenly appearing long after LJ changed ownership; SWAG cause could be that forum software update was loaded, and new defaults established. This would over write the previous time you turned off notifications and/or disabled the account.

BTW – if you are still using the same forum password used many years ago, and use the same password on more than one site; should make a New Year resolution to stop using your Hamster’s name and birth date. Switch to name of your neighbor’s good looking wife and her body measurements. Another easy to remember password is first letter of each one of your kids and pets names, and the age they said the first cuss word.

The above is meaningless drivel posted for your entertainment, and contains no facts known by me to be true.

^^^^ this. I had joined with Martin started it up, then left. The Craftisian stuff only recently started to appear. I’ve tried to unsubscribe and did about anything else I could figure out, but they haven’t stopped. My browser now directs all their stuff to the junk folder.

Thanks, all for the kool replies!

Knowing said Martin as many of us do, from the early days of Lumberjocks, it would be easy to cancel one’s account. just post some racy pictures and salty language on his site, you’re sure to get booted!

Ah – memories…

Who was the guy that went completely bonkers and started posted such pictures all over the site? It was actually surprising how long he got away with it!

As I recall, it was “Ranting Rich”, but there were others. I believe also that somebody found a way to exploit a weakness in Photobucket and could insert nasty pics in place of what members actually posted. Don’t forget the guy whose thumbnail was a bearded man drinking a carton of milk? I can’t think of his name.

I saw that the long-missing Mrs.DebbieP still exists, on that Craftsian site. She was the one who scrubbed the nasty photos from this site, back in the Wild West days of LJ.

I don’t post a lot on either forum anymore but when Martin started the new one I joined to support him. I’m still there and although it has not taken off to LJ proportions, I admire the improvements he has made. Picture quality is better and uploads are easier to name only a couple.
…. and so far no trolling or petty quarrelling either.
In many ways it is like LJ of old but in high definition.
Try it. You might like it.
