Topic tags/keywords: rikon midi lathe

I am interested in the Rikon 70-220VSR model However it is nowhere to be found. Did they simply discontinue it?

It has indeed been discontinued.

Several places are selling it. Amazon for one. I see the digital panel has been updated. Some of the places won’t have it until Jan. Probably the chip shortage holding things up.

The owner of my local Woodcraft store said it had been discontinued. Now that you mention it, he could have been saying that Woodcraft was discontinuing it, not that Rikon was.

Time will tell.

Amazon is NOT selling it. It’s not even listed on their website. Neither are Rikon, Woodcraft and Highland Woodworker. The only place showing it available is Lee Valley, however I’m not sure if their website is updated or not. I’ll give them a call on Monday.

At the same time, the MIDI lathe category added two new models: one from Wahuda and another from Record Power. The later, has some interesting features, but it’s also the most expensive. It still remains to be seen what their presence and customer service in the US are…

I’m not sure if I would know what to do with a VSR. My Rikon 12” is about 16 years old. And I’ve really put it through its paces over the years and it keeps on going. I would love to get their new 30×40 VSR Lathe with Sliding Bed. But there is no way I could afford it.

Rikon 70-220VSR is still listed https://www.rikontools.com/product/70-220vsr.

When I ordered my 70-220VSR through a dealer about 2 yrs ago, it took 3 months to get it. I’m still waiting for four Rikon negative rake carbine cutting tips. I ordered the tips from Woodcraft back in August. I’ve ordered stuff of the Rikon brand five different times. Every time it was shipped from Rikon and not the dealer I bought the Rikon items. Seem like most Rikon dealers don’t stock Rikon, but lists them in their catalogs and their online store.

After I bought the 70-220VSR, it seems I’ve seen the 70-150VSR advertised more than the 70-220VSR.

Turners Warehouse seems to show that they have one but only for in store pickup. I just clicked on a few of the online vendors from the where to buy (online dealers) list on the Rikontools website until one showed it in stock.

That listing is kind of shady. Check out the seller's rating (hint: 73% positive is not someone I want to send my money to)

@ Lazyman…...Thanks for the correction. I can see the difference now. Glad I got my 220 when I did. I love it.

@ Rich…......something must have gone wrong for them. They had good ratings in the beginning, but I agree about not buying from someone with a low per cent rating. I want 90% +

I was told – by someone in management with Rikon – that they were working on new models and a re-design of their lathes. Maybe this is part of the issue you are experiencing. ....Besides the standard shrug and ..”COVID” answers we all get nowadays.

Have your say...
