I put up a post earlier about a friend ordering a Griz 3.25 hp router motor, and soon after my lightly used Porter Cable 3.25 hp motor started making some unique sounds when I turned it on one morning. I also notice the speed control was not working.

I took the top plate off and the speed control lever was not attached to anything, the newer Chinese made I suppose. I called several PC service centers and all their replies were, sorry, can’t get parts for that motor anymore. So, i was had no large router and was out several hundred dollars.

I go on the hunt for a new 3.25 hp motor. I looked at MLCS, Woodcraft (both Bora Portamate looks to be the same as the Griz). I also called Woodpecker, then I called Grizzly.

A couple of my concerns were service and availability of parts. Griz was the only one that assured me they had both and a 12 month warranty. So I ordered the Griz. Paid a little more but got the answers I was looking for.

It got here yesterday. It looks to be a solid motor and it dropped right into my Kreg lift. Switched it on and it’s much quieter than my Porter Cable and runs very smoothly even at it’s highest speed, no vibration. I also think I’m going to like the variable speed control on it. Turn the knob until you get the speed wanted and needed.

The only con I have against is the collects, but then again, I’ve never used any like these. I’m going to run some mldgs on it tomorrow and after I’ve used it some I’ll do a review on it.

Hi Bruce, I hope you get good service from it. I have been wondering what I would do if my PC gives up the ghostly smoke. If this one will drop right in my lift without trying to find parts that would be good to know. I take it the dimensions were similar?

I just got a new Bora motor, and beside looking like the Griz, it’s description is word for word. I think they are made in the same factory. Specs are the same, and I got a new Kreg lift, and mine dropped in on the #1 setting just like the 4.2” PC’s do. Looks like a clone, but acts like the Mercedes Benz version.

When I took the PC out of the lift I left it sitting on my router table upside down. When the Griz got here all I did was drop it into the lift. It slid right in like warm butter. Locked it down and put it back in the router table.

I call several of the listed PC service places in my area and they all told me thy couldn’t get parts for it anymore. One told me they no longer serviced PC products. I bought it at Woodcraft less than a year ago not knowing that the PC routers were not being made anymore. I’ve got a cabinet full of them I bought back in the 90’s and all I’ve ever done to them is blow the dust off and keep going.

They both sure look alike. I went ahead and ran some 3” crown mldgs on it today. I was very please with how the Griz worked, and like the way to change the speed on it compared to the PC. Personally, I think it’s a much better performing motor than the PC that croaked on me.

It’s sure a lot quieter and runs a lot smoother.
