Okay, not duct tape, but what would it take to replace the rubber belt with a sanding one?

I’ve seen lots of serious drum sanders made out of treadmills, but I don’t want to spend a lot of time and make this a project – I just want to replace the belt (and I guess deal with the standing areas on the side that are level with it).

Using it on the ground doesn’t bother me, but am I missing any other issues?

Where do you get (presumably) custom-sized belts?

Oh, I should add that there are at least two of them for $50 on Craigslist here. People move and don’t want to take the treadmill that’s been sitting unused in the garage while they got out of shape. :)

Check out for ideas – they have wide-belt sanding belts. Grizzly sells wide-belt sanders from 24” wide on up, so probably has supplies as well.
I’d love to see where this goes, and there better be duct tape somewhere in the project. ;)
