Help me shoot holes in this DC motor mounting idea

I’d appreciate your insight into making this next part of my DC mods both long-lived and safe.

Every place you can see a problem/deficiency/tweak, I’d appreciate you going ahead and listing your ideas, observations/caveats and solutions.

Here’s my wall mounting idea –
- install the Delta 50-850 motor/blower on the shop wall
- its weight is listed at 86LB
- its inlet will face downward to the Super Dust Deputy mounted directly below
- mount it to three 3/4” pieces BB plywood around 16” square
- attach this three 3/4” plywood and blower/motor assembly with Tapcon screws to concrete block walls

I want to use three pieces of 3/4” plywood to mount the blower/motor so I can move it out from the wall to centre it over the SDD’s outlet and increase shear strength.

How concerned do I need to be about –
- vibration from the blower/motor shaking the Tapcon screws loose
- the whole thing just eventually falling off the wall (?)

In this design, the blower/motor is bolted onto the plywood on the wall.
It doesn’t use a shelf to hold the motor/blower and there.
Plus, there are no triangulated supports – am I right in thinking this type of assembly will need shear support?
How much would running pipe strapping under the blower and screwing it to the joists help?

How about carriage bolts with the heads against the wall, and back thru the plywood like studs. Mount the DC with nuts, washers, and lock washers. I’ve always had good luck with tap cons as long as they get a good bite. If they don’t bite you can save the hole by inserting a small finish nail then try the tap con again.

Your home, your rules of course, but I would allow myself to be horsewhipped before I would drill holes in a Concrete block foundation, unless it already leaks like a sieve.

Instead I would build a 2×4 framed shadow wall to attach to the floor joists above, and 2 very carefully drilled out holes through the sole plate into the concrete pad. Attaching the wall with these.

I can’t even begin to recall the number of houses with your foundation I was called to look at for repair estimates back when I did construction, home repair. Many didn’t claim to have a problem, until…... they drilled those holes. Their absolute integrity depends on the shape they are made into, holes alter that, add weight and chunks often fall out.

Now I’m certain several people are gonna write about their drilled out wall has been fine for XXX years. Life’s a gamble, roll those dice. Concrete block is not the same as a 6” poured concrete wall. I have the 6” poured concrete walls in my own homes basement, and I won’t even drill those. There is a reason there are all of those “dry basement” companies in the yellow pages.

My dc is attached to my shop wall. I used 2 metal cables to attached the outboard side of the motor/blower assembly to ceiling joists. I have no issues with vibration and it has been this way for 6yrs. I can’t speak to tapcon to concrete, but I would be tempted to add a strong construction glue to help with the bond. The guy wires are hard to see in the picture but they are attached to the 2 brackets on the blower. I

Ruscal – thanks – that is the type of nut/bolt/washer setup I’ll be using

the realSteveN – thanks for your idea – I think I’ll go with 2×4s flat on the wall rather than sticking out and I’m not sure about drilling into the floor

Bob5103 – fabulous pic! – thanks – a question for you – what is the reason for attaching the blower/motor so high rather than keeping it closer?

Here is how I did mine.

The blower motor is bolted to 3/4” boards I salvaged. I used T-Nuts to affix the motor. The boards are lagged to the studs in the garage wall. This allowed me to put the motor wherever I wanted it.

I also made a support for the SDD. This allowed me easy access to the barrel for dumping.
I have not noticed any vibration from the motor running. SWMBO would have surely let me know if she could feel or hear it, especially if it was interrupting her Hallmark Movies. I check the bolts every now and then and they are all still tight.

I vent to the outside post SDD through a 6” dryer vent I added. That was pretty loud but I found a post about using insulated flexible ducting that really quietened it down.


My shop is climate controlled. What ever the climate is control’s the temperature in the shop. :)
Venting outside was not an issue for me. I will tell you that the SDD does a great job. I see no sign of any dust on the bushes when running the DC. It all seems to make it into the barrel.
