I was just wondering how far in the dust I am with my phone land line and flip phone I use while traveling. I heard that after Jan 1st, my flip phone will not work any more.

Does anyone out there in Lumberjock land use a land line or flip phone any more or am I the Lone Ranger??

cheers, Jim

I would verify with my carrier whether or not my phone would no longer work after 2 January (I believe Consumer Cellular still sells one that will). I do have a landline still although I use my cell phone, the land line is for my wife (I'm a '43 model while she is '44).

well, it's been long rumored that when 5G becomes the norm all of the 3G & 4G phones won't work.
I see it as a Verizon propaganda program.
I've never had a flip phone, always been a semi smart phone. mostly semi because they all have had features that I never will use.
Getting back to your ? you'll probably be just fine but slow.
now getting to a provider - I have a used
( Amazon purchase) Galaxy S9 with Verizon as the original provider. However my current provider is Tracfone and it use all the same towers that Verizon does for $23 a month.
the only downside is if a person feels compelled to watch movies or play games on the phone and you don't use a free wifi you'll run out of data usage.
But then if you have to watch a movie on your phone - it's time to get a life

I have a landline, and a flip phone. Landline has caller ID and an answering machine that screens out all the scammers and robocalls. Flip phone is rarely turned on but I carry it with me in case of emergencies. my carrier is Boost Mobile - I pay $20 every 3 months, and have no need for anything else. Yes I'm a cavemen when it comes to technology and proud of it - I even have the DNA test to prove that I'm a caveman.

yeah we still have and use a land line with an answering machine that blocks robo calls.havn't had a flip phone in over 15 years, although i loved it,much more compact than the stupid apple phones that are loaded with crap i have no use for.company phone so i dont pay for it.

If you are on AT&T you have 6 months & 24 days left for 3G and 4G. Verizon you have 17 months & 1 day left. But here is where it gets murky, towers that have less than an unknown % of 3 and 4G users "may" be able to do the shutdown early. They don't tell me this but I suspect they are sporadically turning those bands off and back on to see how many devices rejoin the network. I have serval hundred supervised transmitters using that old frequency range and they are gradually failing. I am now replacing a hand full a week now. To the OP, I think you are going to be dragged into the smartphone arena or need to settle on a phone with really big buttons

I think it's been 15 years since I had a land line. If you think about it from a functional standpoint, you call people, not places. Businesses are a little different.

On cell phones, use whatever works for you. I like smart phones for conveniences associated with travel and buying stuff.

Oh, the land lines. I really think the land line market is going to collapse. Just use hurricane sandy as an example. The lines that were taken out in long island stayed out. Verizon said we are not putting them back up. AT&T has tried desperately to make their land line relevant with U-Verse TV but had to throw in the towel and partner with Dish Network. Heck even the cable company here has opened a cell phone store. This is the beginning of the end for land lines too I am afraid.

Hi Chuck, we were talking about a phone just like that at breakfast today. I'll send it all the guys here and tell them this is the new 5G flip phone !!!!!!

Our land line is through an ATT U verse router so I hope they don't discontinue it. I have 8 phones strung out all around the house , shop and barn so I don't take a chance misplacing an I phone and I don't have to charge any batteries!.............Cheers, Jim

How far can we push it? Does anyone still have a corded phone?

We have an old one somewhere. It used to be useful when the power was out but the phone service was still working. Now that our landline is over cable, it dies too when the power to the modem/router is out.

The battery is kind of a non issue. Unless your on LJ all day, a battery will easily last all day.

damn,im out!!! lol.

Ya me too kinda. My day starts at 530. It's almost 9 and I'm at 14%. Have been on the net a fair amount today. Some days I'll have to charge. Especially if I stream music.

But If you just use phone and not much else, they will last a very long time.

Hi Chuck. I have one cordless phone and 7 corded phones, 2 of which are wall mounted. I have one dial phone in an old 1908 wood cabinet I made and you can no longer call on the rotary system but I can receive calls on it yet!

Well I'm half way with you Jim. After having a track phone for 25 years my daughter made me go and get a real cell phone as she calls it. Lol. It took me a few months but it's the norm now.
We also have landline phones through out the house and garage and I still think they are better than any cell phone out there. I doubt if we'll ever get rid of the landline.
While I'm in the shop this is what I use even if my cell phone is in my pocket.

I've a newer flip phone and we still have a land line. I can proudly state I have only sent 4 text message. Thankfullly no one texts me because they know I won't return them. It sure saves on answering the phone as no one wants to take the time to call me either. Now if I could just stop those robocalls. The extended warranty on my pickup is just fine!

Hi Pottz. how would that work if I put one of those Panasonic phones on the line with the other 7?

I run across the barn ever day only to hear "this is your patient advocate" or Microsoft telling me "there is a problem with my computer!!!! " I would not do that but I am expecting calls and don't want to miss them.

I'm glad to see I'm not alone in the FPOC ( Flip Phone Owners Club )

Cheers, Jim
