I tried to log in on my phone while in a waiting room today, and ATT Wireless – not Wi-Fi, I mean cellular data – was identified as a banned IP.

Yup. Not sure why.

No idea what you guys are talking about, however, it just pains me when there are quite a few views yet few get off their rrrses to make an effort… but then again, they all may be like me and are more diligent then me in wasting space.

I often get the “banned IP” when I’m on AT&T cell network too.

Must be where all the free woodworking plans come from. ;-)

This.

It’s called “black listing” where a website/service will block out a particular IP domain due to elevated levels of spamming or other bad behavior originating from there. Often it can be caused by a spammer that manipulates there IP address to looks like another or has a spambot planted inside the tagged organization. Often these organizations get notice of the offense and will correct the issue and be removed from the black list. Others just don’t really care enough unless they start getting a whole bunch-o-complaints. Personally I don’t think ATT is really too worried.

Right, but blacklisting half the mobile phones in America seems like maybe there’s an issue with the algorithm.

Thanks for the ”not guilty” verdict… I thought it was because of undesirables like pottzy, rc and li’l old me... i nearly plunged into an oil polluted pond in retribution and didn’t want to drag the gang down.

I had this problem one time and rebooting my phone fixed it. My gut says some of the IP addresses in the ATT range are banned on the site and when you are served a dynamic IP address from your carrier you lucked into one of the banned ones.

I would think that rebooting the phone or putting it into airplane mode for a few minutes should get you a new IP address on the cell network which should fix the problem.

I have the same issue with my AT&T phone here.
Funny though, if I log in at home on my wifi, or any wifi I have access to. Like at my work, or a guest wifi.
I can then leave that wifi area, and as long as I didn’t log out I am good to go on my AT&T network.
But what seems to be randomly every now and then I will get logged out. Not every time I refresh the page, but what truly seems to be random.
May work great for days.
So when I get booted off. I have to be in wifi coverage area to log back in.
Then it works fine for a few more days.

Same experience here John, as long as I long on while on wifi, it works fine until I get logged off. When I do get logged off, I can temporarily turn on VPN and sign back on—which is what I would do if I was one of the guys that they are trying to block.

AT&T network is infamous for the amount of spam they allow/support and the amount of “nasty” packages delivered under the radar. I am not surprised.

Sounds like Mike has a good hint too.

As I am an old fart and don’t live by my phone, I never have a problem ( Cricket) as I only make phone calls and text.

BTW, AT&T only has a 44.8% market share. Don’t know why as they have horrible customer service and are so expensive. I dropped them many years ago. Verizon did no better so I saved a LOT of money and went low end. iPhone sales?

You just “know” that, huh? I’ve had AT&T service for years and have never had a problem.

Just checked and I get a blocked IP message using the cellular connection, but wifi works fine. So my guess is the public IP of one (or more) of the ATT routers is blocked.

As a side note, it looks like the block is on the LJ side and not on the ATT side since the web page is served with the error message. If the site was blocked by ATT I doubt you would get the page to load in the first place.

With that being said, I think this is something that LJ will have to take action on. I think they should be able to get the IP range for the ATT internet gateways and figure out which blocked IP is the likely culprit.

Whoever “Ted” is with his free woodworking SPAM, he must use AT&T as well as the VPN I use. Al of the US lines of my VPN are also banned, but it’s funny because most of the Canadian lines, and pretty much all of the International lines aren’t blocked. I imagine he, and others like him have muddied the waters for many with legitimate lines.

I’m only blocked from signing in, if I’m signed on, I can switch to a blocked line, so probably if you stay signed in, you should be able access via your AT&T, as John notes above.

I have Norton VPN because it came with my antivirus software and it works fine. It usually makes it look like I am in Cleveland, OH. I guess that no one in Cleveland would ever spam Lumberjocks. :-)
