I made a paint rack and covered the rails with packing tape.

I noticed marks that looked like a reaction to the finish (Target Coatings EM7000HBL).

But in addition, these other marks appears that have nothing to do with the rails. VERY disappointing.

Any ideas? I really thought the finish was completely dry when I turned them over.

Definitely where the rails contacted

The finish will to continue to gas out even after it is dry to the touch.
My guess is the plastic tape trapped the gases against the finish and made the reaction.

I’ve seen this when a door is remade and shipped in bubble wrap to early after finishing.
Same effect only in tiny circles.

The finish needs to gas out for probably 24 hrs before being enclosed in anything like plastic.

A different type rack surface that doesn’t trap the fumes might solve the problem.

The finish wasn’t “cured”.

That particular one takes 125 hours.

The edges of the supports are rounded.

I’d use masking tape instead. Or Painter’s Tape.
And DS is right, the finish will continue to cure for about 72 hours.
Once had a set of bookcase cabinets stick together after being loaded the delivery truck for 48 hours (for an early Monday morning delivery), and big patches of paint came off. Luckily it was all behind 10” base board molding….

oh wow – yes, the marks do not match the rack rails.
Heaven only knows what happened. (I sure don’t have any suggestions).
do you have the option of repainting them ?
