Poplar Plate Set

My Mom mentioned to my wife a few days ago that she wanted me to make a square plate set for her birthday. Well hers birthdays today and she mentioned that on Thursday so I didn't have a ton of time but I think I got it done!

The plates are 7×7x1" made from Poplar, all the plates were cut from the same board of poplar. My hand carving skills need some work so I turned them on my lathe between centers. I didn't want to use a glue block as I'm running low on cut offs and wood is expensive lol. I finished turning and sanding on Friday and started applying Tried and True Friday night followed by several coats. I had never successfully turned a square plate before this, I've tried several times but always break the wings. After the second one was done the other two were pretty easy, what I wish I did differently was sand it off the lathe. I wasted a lot of time think I could sand the core of the plate on the lathe, eventually I realized it was a lot more efficient to just sand by hand. There was a few other people there who wanted me to make things for them as well, so that's nice! Thanks for reading.

They came out very nice.
Poplar is a bit soft for items that will get the use a plate will. A harder finish like Generals or Behlen's salad bowl finish will stand up better in use.

I found when turning square (or other non round shapes) it helps to glue some scrap pieces on the edges to prevent tear out and chipping. When the piece is done you cut, plane, or sand off the scrap wood. A chuck would also speed up the mounting and turning process.
