Topic tags/keywords: white timber mate filler stain maple

I purchased white Timber Mate filler to fix an oops in soft maple. They did not have the maple version in stock. Here’s the question: will the white filler stain differently than the maple version? I’ll be using either warm cherry or Georgia cherry stain.

Yes they will stain differently, and both will stain differently than the wood. I have both, but I don’t have either of those stains to show you.

I answered a similar question in this thread. I also did a blog post a few years ago detailing how to repair a defect and match it to the surrounding area. I used epoxy putty for that, but as I note in the blog post, the same technique would work for Timbermate.

The bottom line is it’s better to fill the stained wood and then touch up the filler to match it, than it is to try to stain a board with filler already in it.

Test on scrap but good advice above.
