DeWalt 735X planer owners: how do you keep the dust collection hose out of the way of the exit side?

I just endowed myself with a 10' hose, which is better than the dryer hose I was using in all ways, but this problem persists.

(The hose is just connected to a bag sitting on the ground, not a ducting system in a commercial workshop.)

While there are probably bigger problems in the world, this is a PITA.

Suggestions?

TIA

Do you think this one will stay put inside the 735's port just using friction?

That connector is 4" OD. It says so right on the listing. Considering that the 735 port is 4" OD as well, it's a safe bet they won't mate at all.

You can either try to find an elbow that's 4" OD on one end and 4" ID on the other, or use a flex cuff. The flex cuff is going to provide a much more secure connection.

I live in the country and woodwork in the barn workshop. For planing though, I roll the 735 to the big open barn door on the actual barn side and let the chips blast out the door. I try to pick days when the wind doesn't blow the chips back in the door. I had all the same problems collecting the chips and dealing with the discharge port location. I finally gave up and went to my less elegant approach.

Sure do like the 735. Its been a real workhorse for years.

With some heat you can enlarge a 4 inch PVC pipe to fit over your planer side opening. NOT 5000F, just a heat gun and slowly, heat the end then slowly push it on. Let cool and pull back off. Some vaseline on the pipe you are fitting to will help when you go to pull it back off. Then just wipe clean. Have made several adapters like this over different sizes.

I attached a 4" HVAC duct elbow to the port with a small screw. Then the flex hose goes from that to the filter bag on the floor along side of the machine.

I've had it that way for a few years now and no problems. You can see it at the 2:38 mark in this video. Or the 0:43 mark in this video.

I then use a 6" to 4" reducer inside the DustRight bag to attach the hose on that end.

I use a 90 degree rubber elbow attached with a pipe clamp. I've tried running a hose to a garbage can but the force of the chips would always blow the top off. I usually end up wheeling my planer out to the driveway and shoot the chips into the woods. As long as it's not walnut, I don't see the harm in adding free mulch to the land.

I've got to say that the impeller really does the job of shooting chips out and away from the planer, but yes, the location is kinda iffy.

The Rockler Dust Right elbow has a rubber boot that fits on the 735 outlet and clamps on tight. Get the Dust Right wand and put it on the end of the hose and you are set. Initially, I wasn't a fan of the dust right set up but I have it on all my equipment.

Just by chance, I stumbled across this 3D-printed offering on Etsy:

Haven't purchased it yet, as I'm not sure I like the idea of exposing the internals to dust by removing the top cover on the planer. Suppose you could fabricate a replacement cover out of MDF or equivalent that would accommodate an opening for dust hose attachment…or cut a hole in the existing OEM cover (don't really like that idea, but it's an option). Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the replies.

I have a bag like that, and it works very well - but I still have to clear out chips from around the threads on the poles every so often.

So far the winner seems to be the Rockler thing. The only drawback is that by the time you add shipping, the price is annoying.

I'm still refining my setup. Cleaning the Dust Right bag is a PITA. I open the zipper and have to reach in and pull out the dust because it doesn't just fall out. I bought a much cheaper Powertec bag and cut the bottom off and use ratchet straps to hold the bag onto a 5 gallon bucket with a garbage bag in it. I've only used it once like this, but so far it works.

Vac fittings and adapters are a great use for a 3D printer. You can find most of what you need on Thingiverse so you usually don't even need to learn a design tool to make your own. There are a few 735 adapters on Thingiverse, including a couple of angled ones. If you don't want to mess with the printer yourself, there are services that will print it for you.

It's less a matter of my not wanting to mess with a 3D printer than my not having one. :)

I can't imagine it would pay to have someone 3D print that, but it is a cool solution nonetheless.

This is what I did:

(I m not Roger)

He has the links right there, a few clicks on Amazon and a couple days later the coupler and elbow were installed. Works very well, very easy, nice tight secure fit.

That looks like a good solution.
