Huh? If you make it just like the one from walmart, there would be no excuse to buy tools.

Fortunately, I am married to a lady who sometimes crochets dish cloths, just because she wants to, which you can buy by the bail for peanuts, just because she wants to. She doesn’t ask questions like that

The standard reply is “because I can!” 8^)

Of course since I sell many of my makings, I don’t want to “steal” ideas and operate a copy shop. Concepts are good, copies are no good.

Define custom.
Everything that leaves my shop is “custom” whether it has been made before or not.

She told me to stop asking how she wants and just make “it” — whatever “it” is.

I’m a a loss.

A lot of people now just want what they see on pinterest, that way they know what it’s going to look like and that other people approve. A lot of times clean lines and simple designs are better on there rather than gimmicky joinery and colors etc When it comes to reality.

LOL – SWMBO asked me that question once, My response:

I make things to make you happy, and since you change her mind so often; must explain what brings you happiness today. That is happiness delivered, not custom made.
She wanted more: so…
My wood working for you is just like McDonalds drive thru; when you ask for pickle and sesame seeds remove from the Whopper with cajun curly fries and a Perrier. Except it takes me couple of months to hunt and kill the sheep and grow ears of corn, that you want in the milk shake.

She promptly shakes her head, walks away, and doesn’t ask that question again.

My wife asked me a similar question some time ago. I responded, “Why do you ask such a dumb question?”

I didn’t see her for about 3 days! Then the swelling went down around my eyes enough that I could start to see a little through the cracks!!!!!

Now I am quick to reply, “Yes Dear!” or “Anything for you Dear!” LOL

I don’t (Usually) see the point of building things you can easily buy. Sometimes it’s be less expensive to buy it….

I prefer to build things you can’t buy. Like a Birds Eye Maple Briefcase…

My SWMBO doesn’t have much input on what or how I build. This reserves her the right to belly ache and complain about how I “Should” have done it when it’s all said and done, LOL!

My SWMBO like to go through her copy of Architectural Digest and point out things she wants me to make. Over the years I’ve gotten pretty good at building from a partial picture of an item. Champaign taste on a beer budget. Last year it was “Make some boxes for the grandkids that will fit into the USPS if it fits, it ships boxes.” She is the creative one on my team, I’m the labor. Been working this way for 46 years. So far, so good.

“Because I want to” is the best answer.

I’m tempted to say “I start out with a non-custom piece but it ends up custom after I fix my mistakes!”

I don’t answer questions from SWMBO. I found it to be futile.
