I just got my first router, a Dewalt DW618PKB combo package. The first two I got from Home Depot were missing the 1/2 inch collet so I returned them. The third one I picked up from Lowe’s had both 1/4 had 1/2 inch. But in playing with it when mounted in the fixed base I noticed the height adjustment is not smooth. I took a closer look at the spiral groove cut into the router body and noticed that the bottom of the groove doesn’t have a smooth finish. It’s rough. Is that normal?

I can’t figure out how to embed a picture, but here’s a link to one: https://i.postimg.cc/pX349Lbd/Router-Groove.jpg

Not sure what exactly you are asking, but the height adjustment on mine seems to work just fine without any issues. The ‘bottom’ of the groove does show some visible machining marks, but that does not interfere with the adjuster that I can tell. Here is a quick picture of mine:

Not sure what exactly you are asking, ...

When I turn the plastic ring to adjust the height it’s not smooth. I can feel roughness more in some places than others. It’s like rubbing two rough stones as opposed to rubbing two polished stones.

Have you tried using a little bit of wax?

Welcome to LJ… I can’t help with the router, however, I can help with the picture.

  1. Click on the ”img” button.
  2. On the drop down, click on ”Browse”.
  3. After selecting you file (in your browser pop-up), click on the ”Insert this image” button… don’t change the syntax generated for the upload… type around it.

Thought about it, but haven’t done that yet. I don’t remember the same roughness on the two I returned, but unfortunately I no longer have them so can’t do a visual comparison. I’ve used up my local options and may order one from Amazon to see if that’s any smoother.

OP here. So I ordered another 618 router from Amazon and it arrived today. The bottom of the spiral groves on this one is nice and smooth, as expected. Alas, it was missing he 1/2 inch collet. So three out of the four routers I purchased brand new were missing the 1/2 inch collet. I think Dewalt has a quality control problem.

Contact DeWalt. Bet they will send you a new collet under warranty rather than have to deal with a return.

If you felt the other 2 you got from Lowes were smoother it looks like the guy in charge of sanding the inside smooth has a better record than the guy in charge of dropping collets of both sizes in the boxes.

China made this, strikes again.

According to the major retailers, it was made in Mexico.
