I came across this video by Stockroom Supply here in Canada. I was seriously considering getting the Laguna 1216 but seems like the Record lathe is the better option? What do you guys think?

Shocking that a place that sells one would rate it higher than one they don’t sell.

The price point of the lathes to me makes it comparing apples to oranges. You get what you pay for.

Now to be clear which is the apple and which is the orange? I plan to get the lathe with a stand. With the stand the Laguna is actually a few hundred dollars more than the Record.
At this point I’m leaning towards the Record

Over the years I’ve read a lot of complaints about Laguna electrical problems, from stuff like switches and potentiometers to drive boards. Enough that I would not buy one.

The RP lathes get good reviews but reliability is unknown since they are fairly new. No doa complaints that I have seen. Its a light lathe, so depending on what you plan to turn it may need weight added. If you plan to do 14” and larger bowls and platters using the outrigger, you will be much better off with a larger lathe.

Had to turn the video off! Every turner soon learns actual distance between center changes base upon accessories mounted in both head/tail stock. Actual Swing over the bed and not often stated in specs swing over tool rest base important too!

JMHO just not a big fan of outboard turning, biggest reason is safety. To be honest outboard turning been around long before got into woodturning and lot of turners enjoy turning that way. I like tailstock support for roughing out and sometimes extra support in final turning.

Not knowing all lathe brands available in Canada, know there are full size imports that sell for about same or less than the three lathes mentioned in the video.

OneWay actually sold first midi lathe on the market with their 12” x 24” wood lathe. When got into turning could buy that lathe for $1,000 US.

I would not have any problems with any of the three lathes shown in the video!

I was going by the base price quoted in the video. The Record non-sale price was way more than the others.

Oh ok I understand!
So I just put my order in for the Record Coronet Herald. Looks like I’ll be waiting a few weeks as they have been selling faster than they expected and they are out of stock. I’ll give you guys an update when I receive it.

There are other sturdy lathes too, such as the 1221vs from Jet (my personal choice) but if I had to choose only between these two, I would go with Record Power.
