Just finished an old gunstock with Danish Oil. got the color I want but since it will be used out in the weather, I’d like to put a harder top coat on. I have polyeuathane and spar varnish. suggestions?

I would not use a film finish on a gunstock. A renewable oil finish will be much easier to maintain. Just my thoughts.

Consider Waterlox. I did oil finishes for a long time, but on the last rifle I used Waterlox Original satin. It came out great.

I used “Formby’s tung oil finish” on a few M1 Garand stocks many years ago and they have held up very well, even with the with the exposure to the typical cleaning solvents.
Certainly not out-in-the-filed-hunting type use but I’d avoid anything that produces a thickish film as Bill advises.

Take a look some of the hard wax oils. Osmo is one.
