Should you sand Crotch Mahogany Veneer?

Doing a project with veneer panels of crotch mahogany. It’s my first time working with it. All of the veneer pieces have some degree of rough spots/minor tear out in the grain pattern. I took a test piece and tried light sanding with 150, then 180 , 220. Not a great outcome as to me there are inevitably fine scratch marks across the crazy grain patterns. I used a sharp hand scraper and that was more pleasing.

I ultimately want that glass smooth finish …like I knew what I was doing…but here I am asking for help.

Aj2 home \| projects \| blog 3764 posts in 2851 days #1 posted 02-28-2021 05:03 PM	I would scrape it with a meticulous prepared card scraper. Then try sanding with 400 grit. Another option if you plan to fill the grain is pumice or rotten stone with denatured alcohol. It will be some work but it’s a very good look. Good Luck -- Aj
