Topic tags/keywords: jointer planer combo mortiser Hi everyone! I’m a new poster here, but I’ve read a lot of posts over the years. I’m hoping to get an idea of the value of a tool I can’t find online. I’ve stumbled on a Knapp AD410 Profit jointer/planer combo, distributed by Laguna, when my friend’s father died. He has a whole woodshop full of amazing tools, all of which I know what they are worth, except for this one. I can’t get a comparable value anywhere. Does anyone here know what this thing is worth on the used market? I believe it is 16” and it has the mortiser. It has straight knives. Would I be an idiot to let this slip through my fingers? What is a fair price to either ask for it or offer for it? I’d appreciate any help you all can give me! -Matt -- -Matt |

I gave $1750 for mine I think, a couple of years ago. Without the mortiser. It’s 6hp 3 phase so you’ll need to plan for that. |

Thanks, Loren. That’s super helpful. That’ s a lot of power…gulp. I don’t have 3 phase so I’ll have to work that out. Does yours have a spiral cutterhead or straight knives? Are you happy with it? Would you recommend that I buy it for myself or sell it for them? I currently have a Grizzly 8” parallelogram jointer with a spiral cutter and the Dewalt 735, also with a shelix cutterhead. I’d love a bigger machine and I’d love to save the space and have just one, but I don’t want to bite off more than I can chew with machinery. -- -Matt |

It has straight knives. It’s a great insert system but knives are more dear than the more common Tersa knives. It’s a helluva machine. Welded underwater to prevent distortion. Knapp made stuff so good it drove them out of business. You don’t need a 16” jointer for most work. Your equipment is fine. You’ll love the mortiser but most guys today want a domino so that makes it a wash for a lot of work if you figure on using a domino anyway, minus the $1000+ price of the domino . If they take an offer of $200 or whatever you could sell the gear you have at near enough to that the machine will feel like a screaming deal. I fear the circumstances of the company being defunct and the 3 phase power will inhibit my resale value but it can’t be by too much. Guys pay $7000 for a comparable Minimax model with no qualms. Mine has an extension table too. The feed runs on a variable speed drive with a separate motor. The machine is built like a tank out of 5mm steel but if the internals break I’m out of luck. I hope they built it to last. I use a 10hp rotary phase converter. It wasn’t too pricey to build with a motor I found locally on ebay. 3 phase motors don’t keep much value on the secondhand market. The converter box and wiring were about $350 I think. You’ll probably need a 100 amp panel in your shop. You can get passive phase converters (I forget the terms) pretty cheap and they reduce power by 1/3rd. 4hp would still be adequate imo. |

Hi Loren, thank you so much for the advice and input! I went back and saw that it is running perfectly and it is already set up for single phase 220 and he had it set up on a 30amp circuit. Crazy. If I need more power I can run it because I don’t have to worry about the 3 phase. So, I bought it for $2000 and I plan to sell my jointer and planer. I’m pretty stoked and it’s definitely the most beastly machine in my shop…by FAR. I don’t have the extension table…but I would buy one if I ever saw it out there. If anyone has one, please let me know! Where do you buy your knives? Have you considered upgrading to the shelix head? -- -Matt |

I just shop around when I need them. I have thought about replacing it but it would be about $1500 and really the head it has is pretty slick. |

Shelix heads are all the rage on the interweb and YouTube , but the reality is there are few instances where they make fisical sense. Now, if your a collector…........they’re priceless. |

@Loren – I was able to sell my jointer/planer for about what I bought the Knapp for. It worked out well. I also found the cast iron extension and steel extensions when I picked it up. It’s up and running and rock solid. I do have one question – I am trying to figure out how the back bracket/guard for the fence attaches. I think I’m missing a little “down holder” piece, but the manual is unclear. Is it too much to ask for you to send me a picture of how it attaches to the the main body of the machine? It has a funny little spring plate underneath it that makes little sense to me… Thanks, again, for your help! -- -Matt |

I just picked up a Knapp profi T too really excited about getting it going. Could you please send me the information on planer blades it has a 4 knife cutter head, does it use the Tersa blades? Thanks Mike. It came with a decent manual I can make copies if anyone needs one. Mike |

Mine uses Centrofix knives. |

Congrats, Mike! Looks like you and I are in the same boat! I also have a good manual, which has been super helpful. Mine is missing the bracket that holds the jointer fence support contraption down on the back. If you have that and can share a pic of what it is supposed to be, I’d be super grateful! My cutterhead is a Wigo head. Is that what your’s is too? I haven’t found knives for it online yet…and it looks like it takes very specific ones because I believe they self register. -- -Matt |

I have a wigo too, after some research they can be found fairly easily look for centrofix style knives. as far as the hold down mine seems to be absent as well. |

Thanks! Yeah, that’s exactly what I have, which has no part to hold it to the main body of the machine. I used a bolt and a large washer and it works well enough for now, but I’d love to know what it actually looked like so I can try to replicate it. Thanks for the tip about the Centrofix knives. Someday, once I recover from the purchase, I might upgrade to a helical head. We’ll see. :) -- -Matt |

I assumed it slots into the channel on the fence. I never used it so I could be wrong. |
