This is the first drill press I’ve owed or operated and it’s brand new. Today is the fist day I’ve turned it on and I’m fairly certain what I’m feeling and hearing is not normal. Watch the video and tell me if you think I should return it or if there is an easy fix. I was going to buy the Nova Voyager, but changed my mind at the last second because the Jet went on sale and the Nova didn’t. I’m starting to regret that decision…. |

This is why you need to buy expensive tools. :):) Definitely not normal. -- Alaskan's for Global warming! |

LMAO!!! You got me! I’ll wait for some other replies, but I’ve already prepped the wife for the eventual return of this drill press and the purchase of the Nova Voyager. She said, “At least you tried the less expensive one.” |

Does it have a drive belt and pulleys? It sou/nds like it could be something “kissing” the drive belt and/or pulley. |

It has a drive belt and pulleys and I looked in that area, loosened and retightened the belts without any change in sound. It definitely appears to be a problem along the spindle and not with the pulleys. It feels like a tooth on a gear is slipping. I changed the speed and it sounds like a woodpecker. |

Sorry you are having this problem. Did you look at the 1-star Amazon reviews here?: Check out the one titled “Noise Vibration and Harshness.” It is an old review, but sounds a lot like the problem you are seeing. -- "Join the chorus if you can. It'll make of you an honest man." - I. Anderson |

I did see those which are mostly very old, but thought since other websites it had better reviews, it would be okay. At least I have a good reason to buy the Nova now. |

I had a Jet Drill Press and it was noisy and had high run out. I bought the Nova and smile every time I use it. |

I have to finish these holes before returning the press since the shipping time is many weeks for the Nova, so I ran it today and it has new sounds! Skip to 30 seconds if you only want to hear the new squeaks. Adding this: I guess the squeaks are normal. They are present in Jet’s marketing video at minute 8 here: https://youtu.be/Are92r5naEw As for the runout, it is 0.002” at the top (closest to the chuck) of the shaft of the Forstner bit, which I think is good. Measured near the cutting tip of the bit was almost exactly the same. I have a Golden Goose keyless chuck made in Taiwan (as opposed to the later versions made in China). The chuck is awesome. |

Send it back. No way I’m gonna repair a new, faulty piece of equipment. |

I agree. One bit of advice for anyone buying one of these or similar is to check the table top for any tiny burs and smooth it all down. When I flipped over the board I was drilling holes in, there were multiple gouges streaking down the board cause by me sliding it across the table. Doh! |

Pull the belt and see if the noise goes away. If it does, spindle bearing chain is bad. If no, motor bearing chain. If noise stays with motor is less of an issue if noise is in spindle column. Tooth on a gear feel is flat ball in bearing set. Send it back. -- The hump with the stump and the pump! |

Where is the JET made? Their tools have been made in Taiwan, but they may now be made in China and if so, I can understand the problem you are having. |

Glad you asked this. One of the main reasons I purchased this particular brand is because I thought it was made in Taiwan, but mine states “Made in China” on the serial number plaque thing. FYI Nova Voyager is also made in China, but has better reviews. |
