Clamp Together Pipe Connections to Clearvue Ports ?

I just purchased a CV1800 for a small shop that I’m building out. Was originally planning to use S&D PVC for the ducting, but—since it’s such a small shop (16’ x 10’ with the DC installed in an adjacent 5’x5’ utility room)—I feel like I can spring for CT (Nordfab-style) steel pipe: 6-inch for all of the ductwork. I’m working on getting a bid from Blastgate Co and I’ve just about got it locked down. The only question I have left is how to connect at the DC intake and at the two drops, which I plan to terminate with CV 6-inch to 2x4-inch transitions.

Question: How have the rest of y’all managed your CT pipe terminal connections? Pictures would be highly appreciated.

I’ve seen a few folks say that they’ve use Fernco connections, but I’m a bit unclear on precisely which Fernco(s) would do the trick (6×6? 6×8? something else?). I’ve seen others say that you “need” a specific modified manifold from ClearVue for the intake. I understand that all of the ports on the CV items (intake and transitions) are 6.25” ID, but I have no idea what the OD is. I know that there are machine adapters and hose adapters available for the CT pipe, but I don’t fully understand how these would mate to the ports and then to the pipe itself.

Any details y’all can share on what’s worked (or what hasn’t worked) would be greatly appreciated!!

Once you know the OD of tube to connect, you can find best matching Fernco size here:

Will likely find the 1055-66 or 1056-66 fit OD of your 6” pipe. Fernco fittings will stretch ~0.100, but that makes them hard to assemble (use liquid dish soap). They will easily clamp down on pipe ~0.250” smaller than listed.

Sorry to inform, the DC and trunk line are easy part. :-(0)

IMHO – the hardest part of DC system is machine connections and avoiding using hoses with much higher pressure losses.

Suggest you avoid using 4” connections were possible, unless using several at same time. You spent $$$$ for big DC, so upgrade tools to use 5/6” ports so you can utilize the full extent of your DC system. Choking down 6” to single 4” pipe, reduces the airflow volume significantly and is not maintain enough airflow to keep chips suspended in ducts; unless you open additional port downstream. It can be PIA to remember that to open another gate/port when using single tool with 4” connection. I moved most of my tools to 5in ports and started a thread on sources for fittings, that might help you with machine conversions.

wow with that setup i dont think your gonna have a problem collecting dust.if thats all the ports your gonna have i think klutz is right about dropping from 6”-4” gonna be be starved for air flow.unless you plan on expanding the amount of ducting and blast gates it seems like way over kill.

I think he does have 6” pipe all the way through.. he marks some pipes as 4 foot long.

OP, you’ll love the clearvue. It’s so much better than the bag collectors.
I used sewer and drain, it was not that bad. The only slightly annoying part was making sheet metal “adapaters”
that I could screw the flexible pipe too. Not that bad though. I suggest just taping your ductwork together (use foil tape or something to help seal the joints).. You might want to change or expand your ductwork later, so you want
it relatively easy to take apart if need be.

It is all 6” pipe, but yes—I was operating under the assumption that I’d start things off by terminating at 4-inch ports (with 4” flex to connect directly to the machines’ ports). I’ll admit that I still have a hard time understanding airflow in general, but the use of the word “starving” helps clarify. If opening a second gate will work to get me started, then that sounds like a viable starting point (seems simple enough, since there will be “paired” 4” gates connecting to the 6” drops).

I’m really looking at this as the beginning, and the CT ducting should allow relatively easy modification down the road (i.e. running it across to the other side of the shop). This is a brand new shop in a house I’m building, for machines that I mostly don’t own yet, so I don’t want to get too carried away up front and realize that I’m going to use the space completely differently from what I’ve imagined and have to start all over. Upgrading the machines to allow for larger ports at that point makes a lot of sense, so that will definitely be on the agenda as well.

Fernco connections at all of the “question marks” in my drawing sounds like it is the most viable solution for the connections.

I’d still love to know

  1. If anyone here has pictures of CT pipe connecting to a standard CV1800 intake manifold
  2. If anyone here has pictures of CT pipe connecting to a “CV 6” to two 4 transition
  3. If anyone here knows the actual OD of the CV1800 intake manifold (I’ve email CV already, FYI)
  4. If anyone here knows the actual OD of the “upstream connection” of the CV 6” to 2×4” transition
