I do not have a skill set for handling live edge slabs. I purchased several 2”x16”x8’ slabs to construct kitchen countertops. My goal is to keep the countertops flat, true and free of defects for many years. Are there tips and or tricks that I need to be aware of? What comes to my mind is fastening steel flat bars on the underside of the countertops and then ( kreg) pocket hole the countertop to the island carcass, is this a feasible plan? The countertop will be for a 4’x 8’ island, there will be cutouts for a cooktop and A sink also there will be a dishwasher under the countertop.

I’m sure others will chime in with more useful contributions, but: do you know when they were milled? Are you familiar with the rule of thumb that says 1 year per 1” of thickness before wood is dry?

The bar holes ought to be slotted to allow movement and I imagine at least 1/4” thick.

If the tops pass, Are they dry?moisture content….I’ve made a lot of live of live edge tops. Can we see what you have?

I have a tip hire a professional. Or pay the tuition and learn the hard way.
The live edge slab craze was brought forth by George Nakashima if you haven’t read his book the soul of a tree I recommend it.
Big wood big machines or lots of tricks up your sleeve from many years at the craft.

Moisture content is very important as is making sure the top and bottom are treated with the same finish treatment. Pay attention to the grain, quarter sawn is the most stable but more scarce. It also often has the least attractive face grain with the thinnest live edges.

Ours usually went in offices but on occasion they will put one in a restaurant.. We buy from a reputable company and there not cheap but we don’t sell cheap…some tops must hit 36” on its narrowest point…
