I’m new to woodworking and my buddy gave me some wood to start my journey. He did not know what kind of wood it was. Hoping someone here has an idea

Top piece is spalted, maybe maple. The second could be walnut.

Welcome to LumberJocks!

Spalted lumber makes it a little harder to identify species.
Large grain spacing, could be silver maple, sycamore, or a gum species.
