I am building a platter and want to put a 1/4 spacer in between 16 segments. The segments are 2.1/4 wide by 5 long. The grain in the segments are running the right direction. I want to use Ebony as the spacer. Will I be asking for trouble if I run the spacer grain the other direction or should i glue up enough ebony to run it the same direction as the segments. I am worried that a cross grain piece that small will crack.

How many segmented layers?

I plan on about a 3” disc on the bottom an maybe a 1” segmented ring around the ton top

I ask because end-grain glue joints (which is what you have when constructing a segmented ring) are notoriously weak. End-grain to side-grain joints are only marginally stronger.

Unless the rings are supported with face-grain glue joints, you are likely to experience glue joint failure … which is why segmented turners use a ‘brickwork’ pattern when stacking rings.

I don’t think a 3” disc is going to provide enough glue surface to adequately support a 10” ring.

So I have gone with a 1/8 spacer The segments are just over 2 wide but 5 long. i plan on putting another ring on the top to help tie it together so I guess it will end up being a shallow bowl. The points come to about 1” from joining so yes i will put a floating disc bottom
