I recently acquired a unisaw. The saw came with a 3-phase 3 hp motor. I’m still considering a vfd to go from single phase 220 – 3-phase 220.

99.9% of the time, it is much more cost effective to just splurge the $200 or so for a VFD than try to swap over to a single phase motor. Plus, a three phase motor is more efficient and robust with basically just bearings to worry about (no start circuits, capacitors, etc…). Paired with the VFD, it will do things not possible any other way. And you can sell your existing starter to recover most if not all of the cost of the VFD.
