Topic tags/keywords: question mortiser hollow chisel bit adapter

Hey Folks,

I just bought a Baileigh Industrial mortising machine the MC100TT

They advertise its’ capacity as 1/4” chisels up to 1”, but the machine shipped with only one chisel adapter which has an inside diameter of 7/8” and an outside diameter of .99”. This adapter fits over the shank of the square chisel, and into the mortiser where it’s held in place with a set screw.

The problem is it didn’t ship with an adapter for smaller or larger chisels. As you can see below, the adapter for my smaller Jet mortiser uses an industry standard adapter which has an outside diameter of .99” and an inside diameter of 5/8”

and yes, I can use the Jet adapter with the Baileigh mortiser, but I’m going to sell the Jet mortiser now that I have the Baileigh, and the adapters will have to go with it.

I need to find some adapters for my new mortiser that will handle the smaller chisels – Baileigh does not offer any adapters at all, and I don’t even know how to think about or look for an adapter for a 1” chisel, because the opening in the mortiser where the adapters go in is 1” inside diameter.

If anyone can help me find some adapters I would be very grateful.

Thanks,
Gerald

Nice mortiser! Finally, one that angles the right way for chair making.

Looks like you’ll have to keep the Jet bushing for now, while you order one from Baileigh.
As long as the new owner of your Jet knows what size chisels to buy, I think they’ll be happy.
Replacement parts have been available for all my Jet tools recently.

It sure is nice to have all available bushing sizes so that any hollow chisel you might buy will actually fit.

Good luck with it!

I’m surprised they didn’t come with it. Maybe you can order one for Grizzly. That’s a nice looking mortiser.

Hmm,
Looking at the manual, they don’t say the chisel bits use different adapter.
The specifications show it requires 3/4” or 19.05mm shank?

Something is strange.
Suggest you call the mfg and ask how you get right size adapter in manual , or where you can buy the proper size shank chisels to fit the adapter.

BTW – 1” mortise chisel does not need an adapter for 1”, as 3/4 shank mortise chisels exist.

And that machine is mfg as 100% metric. The 0.99” is probably 25mm?

PS – If all else fails might contact the REAL mfg in Taiwan. Baileigh was going bankrupt a few years ago, and reorganized with new management and major investment from Chiu Ting Machinery Co (GeeTech) in Taiwan. Rumor has it they make almost everything for Baileigh, and machines they don’t make they still handle the logistics for US sales team via their own China mfg plant.

Best Luck.

Thanks CaptainKlutz!

This is very helpful!

You’re right, 100% metric. Old habits die hard…

I’ve learned a little since I posted this… Seems Jet has different size chisel shanks for different size chisels, but there are a lot of chisel sets out there that have a 19mm chisel shank across their entire range, so it seems that my problem has disappeared!!

This Baileigh Industrial mortising machine should be a pleasure to use. You have done some good upgrades this year with the new Planer head you bought from Mike. Your post gave me the urge I needed to upgrade my planer as well, so I called Mike and purchased a new spiral carbide cutter head. Thanks to you it has been a Blessing in a number of ways. The price was right, noise is greatly reduced and has a extremely smooth cut. Thanks Jerry may you have a Blessed Day.

Jerry I’m glad you found your answer.
I was going to suggest buying the jet part you are sending when you sell the Jet.

Since I use my Powermatic a lot I know what you mean.

Can’t wait to see what you build with the great tool.

Hello my friend, I’m so glad to hear that you did the planer upgrade. Now you understand why I was so happy with it.

So this is kind of sad / funny. I decided since the jet part would work in the new mortiser that I would just buy another Jet adapter – one to keep and one to go with the mortiser when I sell it.

Turns out the hole where the set screw goes in the Jet adapter did not match, so I drilled a new hole on the opposite side of the old hole so I could use it with the Baileigh mortiser. After I drilled the hole and ordered the replacement adapter, I found this:

Square Hole Drill Bit, Steel Hardness Sharp Durable Mortising Chisel Set 1/2-Inch, 1/4-Inch, 3/4inch, 3/8-Inch, 5/8-Inch, 5/16-Inch, 9/16-Inch Woodworking Mortiser Drill Bit-7pcs

Ironic, right?!

Jerry Lee Valley has great Mortising chisels from Japan. I have about 6 of them they cut through hardwoods like it’s softwood.
If your Mortiser didn’t come with a diamond cone sharpener Lee Valley has a hand held one and I also got their auger sharpening file.

Happy woodworking!
