Topic tags/keywords: stanley brace 945 frozen ratchet hand tool

I picked up a few braces at a recent estate sale. One is a Stanley 945-10. The ratchet selector is frozen. I was able to move it a bit with a wrench but was messing up the knurling and it’s even more froze. I’ve soaked in WD-40 and then PB Blaster when that didn’t work. Nothing has helped.

I read the wonderful thread by Brit about restoring a brace and was able to remove the pawls but still can’t figure out how to unfreeze the ratchet selector. Is there another pin that I’m missing? I’m only in this for a few dollars but I don’t want to give up!

Stick it in a vise, soak with penetrating oil and heat it with a torch. Then as you’re heating, wiggle wiggle wiggle. Line your pliers or vise grips with aluminum so you don’t Marr the brace. You will have it loose in about 4 minutes, you won’t need to get it very warm, and nothing will be harmed.
