Topic tags/keywords: grizzly affirm damaged tip warning happy ending

After raising hell, Grizzly offered, and I accepted, a $100 credit to keep the damaged unit.

They’re now back in my good graces.

——————————————————————-

Recently I purchased a new stationary belt sander, ShopFox W1717. It had been on backorder for a while and when it became available I ordered one and paid for it using Affirm payment option. Little did I know what a mistake that was.

Shop Fox W1717 – 1/3 HP Horizontal/Vertical Sander

Normally Grizzly is excellent about fixing shipping damaged items. I kicked back a TS and it was promptly replaced without question after informing Grizzly of the damage.

The W1717 package was a little beat up but not more so than anything else heavy (66#) that UPS ships.

I pulled the sander out of the package and at first glance everything looked ok so I went ahead and assembled the metal stand. After attaching the sander to the stand I noticed that the bracket to mount the aux table was crushed.

Crushed bracket

The bracket is welded to the motor housing and cannot be replaced separately without replacing the entire motor assembly.

Rust indicates old damage.

Notice the RUST on the bracket. This was not fresh damage. It was damaged in shipping well before it got to me.

When you use Affirm to make payment, the payment is tied to a specific serial number and therefore they can’t just swap out the unit, I have to tear down the base and repack and return for credit only. I then have to go to the end of the line and reorder – only it’s back on backorder.

So now I’ve invested time and effort assembling the stand (two hours!) and my only option is send it back and try again as if I was cold ordering again. They won’t even put me at the head of the backorder line. A dead waste of my time and effort.

Since it was going to cost Grizzly the return shipping I asked Grizzly if I kept the damaged unit if they would give me a discount or credit for accepting “damaged goods, as is”. Nope. Not a peep or a counter offer.

So I’m stuck with a damaged (but not unusable) machine that I’m paying full bore on. I told Grizzly that they were about to lose a good customer and nada. So here I am warning y’all not to purchase Grizzly tools using the Affirm financing.

Sad, I used to like Grizzly service.

Caveat emptor!

FINAL UPDATE: Grizzly offered, and I accepted, $100 to keep the damaged unit. They made good after all!

Sorry to hear that madMark, you would think a company that has a lot of items on back order would have the funds to keep good customers happy.

What about a UPS claim??

Well, it doesn’t sound like your stuck…more like you chose to be stuck. It’s inconvenient to be sure, but I’m not quite convinced the back order stuff is all Grizzly’s fault. With the current politics and other problems going on they may just be victims of stuff out of their control; kinda like the rest of us. But they did offer your money back.

Sometimes we get stabbed in the back people we have trusted. No one likes that for sure!!
Shake off the dust and consider it a bad tasting loss of a trusted friend. Sadly, what is….is, I feel for ya. larry

Personally I am done ordering anything heavy that I can’t pickup myself. Last thing was a welder I ordered from rural king. There sale price with shipping was about $150 cheaper than I could buy it locally. When it arrived it was all dented up like someone dropped it once or twice. I tried to return it but since I opened it(box was not damaged any more than most boxes), then i would have had to pay for shipping etc. And boxing up and shipping a 90 pound welder is not cheap. So I decided to keep it but everytime I use it I get mad and wish i would have just paid more to not have that hassle.

I just checked Amazon ratings on the sander and seems like (to me) not so good.
1 star is higer than the 5 star rating.

That rust seems to indicate that it was damaged before the container left port and the salt ocean air got to it. Saying that the financing is tied to a specific serial number may be true but if the unit needs to be replaced the serial number on file can simply be edited to reflect the new replacement. The back of the line is BS. They may not be able to whip one up immediately but the can and should put you at the front. A nice email to the higher up stating your disappointment may get things moving faster.

Even the 5 star reviews said they had to fix damage before they used it.
How do you give something 5 stars if you have to fix it right out of the box?
.
.

The rust residue you see inside is probably there on all of them, you just don’t see it.

Hammer that cheap crap back into place and just use it for what it is.
The small items you are making, it should be fine for.

Get a call tag and send it back. No amount of discount would convince me to keep that…., other than free.

why it’s reality,if it’s minor damage id just fix and use.based on the ratings id take grizzlys refund and buy a better quality one. i do think mark should be put at the head of the list for a new one if he chooses that option.with the pandemic backorders are a way of life for a lot of companies.

I want them to ship me a replacement that I can use to swap out the damaged one without having to tear the stand down and have to rebuild it again, when, and if, a new one shows up.

If I tear it down and ship it back the time spent building, tearing down, repacking and reshipping is lost, wasted. For at the end I’ve done the work and spent the time with nothing to show for it but three weeks more without the tool and no telling when I’ll get another because they put me at the far end of the line for a replacement – if and when my refund posts.

I thought that if I kept it, Grizzly could at least credit the return shipping, but no.

The crushed bracket was crushed before it was shipped – if it was fresh damage it wouldn’t be rusted!
