My desktop pc has Windows 10 Home version. For years I’ve had photos in separate folders, just for ease of finding them. I imagine everyone else does too.

It used to be when I would click on a pic, I would see the pic. Now when I click on a pic, it opens in MS Paint. To see the pic I have to right click on the pic, choose OPEN WITH , then select the program to open the pic. At this point, I can see all the pics in that folder, but going to another folder I have to start all over. Needless to say, this is starting to suck.

I don’t what I did to cause this. How do I fix this?

THANKS!!!!

Here’s a link to a walk through to show thumbnail images and not the icons, I believe you can also set the open with program too, had to do the same thing a while back

Thanks ChefHDan. That didn’t fix it. It was setup as the link recommends. I tried it with and without checking the box: Always show icons, never thumbnails. No difference. I am using the extra large icons.

I’m used to calling a small pic that you can open by clicking a thumbnail. Windows is calling it an icon. I think.

When I open the folder, I can see a small pic. When I double click a pic, it opens in MSPaint. I want it to open in Photos, that way I can view, edit or whatever.

Windows 10 sucks. And W8 was just dumb. I still run W7, and am still getting updates, though they said they would end support beggining of this year.

I know that doesnt help, Hairy, sorry.

My daughter says you are missing a “photo viewer” program, so W10 defaults to Paint. Maybe thatll help?

What is the default setting for opening photos?

Right click on “start”. Click “settings”. Click “apps” Click “default Apps”. What is the selection for photos? You can change the default program by right clicking on the assigned icon and then picking the program you want from the list.

I believe when you get to the “open with program”, there is a box at the bottom that says to set this as the default for those type of files? Not positive but check it and see.

Thank you Kazooman! and every one else.

That was it. I didn’t see Photos or pictures listed for default apps, but up in the left corner of that page was a search box. That’s how I found it.

Thanks!!!!

I also have Win 10 home on my PC, and when I click a pic it opens right then. Now if I right click on it, and ask to “open with” then paint is one of the many options. I use it if I want to change, crop, increase or decrease the size of the pic, whatever.

When I right click any picture, and go down to properties, it say opens with photos. I’d suggest right clicking on any pic on your computer. Go to the bottom of the list, and see if it says opens with paint? Next to it, should be a small rectangular radio button that says CHANGE click that, and see if it has a choice, just named PHOTOS. If it’s there just choose that, and instantly all pics on your computer will convert.

If it’s not there, but I think it will be, it feels like a Winblows program, looks like one too. But if it’s not, go Google for it, see first if it comes as an extension you can add to your browser. Extensions are a lot easier to add, and SUBTRACT should the need arise.

I really think it will be there though.

It’s the thought that counts.

Computers get screwed up everytime it updates. iTunes is terrible for that.

FTR – My go to sites for Windoz 10 OS issues is: https://www.tenforums.com
I have used their Windows Seven, Eight, and Vista help forums for decades.
Always have the best and most complete Win OS help on web.

They have very nice tutorials, including one to dump the new Win10 Photo program, and replace the default with older Photo Viewer.
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/14312-restore-windows-photo-viewer-windows-10-a.html

I made the switch back as the new Photo program takes forever to load on my antique PC.
YMMV

My issue with all of the Wincrap products is on a forum they tell you when you open XYZ, you click on blah blah blah. Lo and Behold on the POS version you have it doesn’t work that way, or the things they tell you to look for aren’t there. They give their junk free to the schools, and gubmit, so they get an absolute pass on having to have any accountability. Not sure what other product lines are out there if you buy new, you have to expect to fix it a number of times, because they ship them all broke. Of course they call them “updates” pfffft.
