Ok. I’m really tight with money. I’ve had a screamer shop vacation forever and would like to get something quieter. Can someone ( or everyone:) ) convince me that a Fein shoo vac is worth the money?

Why not just jam a muffler into the shop vac outlet?

When I need to do lots w/ mine I always use the muffler to decrease the noise.

Because it won’t significantly quiet the motor noise. Both of my c-man shopvacs have mufflers and, regrettably, do little to quiet their noise.

There are other choices, and some may be slightly less expensive. Anyway, I have 3 (the oldest is over 20 years old) and I’m quite (pun intended) happy with mine. But the newer ones have been changed in design and I’m less sure if they are as good as the old ones. Even then, some folks have had problem with some of the models over the years (mostly power switch stuff, if I recall). But to answer your question: I can’t. It’s a value judgement. To me they are worth the money, but as I said…there are quite a few others available now that may be worth looking over. When I bought mine there were fewer choices. But I did buy mine for the quiet, and that’s worth a lot to me.

Most of the noise is motor noise and not exhaust I believe. I don’t that the muffler would do what I need it to do.

I’ve looked at other shop vac ads none give decibel ratings so I’m not sure what another quieter brand would be

for the best quiet shop vac are the FEIN Turbo II at 66 dB, and the Festool CT 26 at 62 dB. The best budget model is the Vacmaster VWM510 at 74 dB.

Good luck with your decision.

I have the Festool. Sure was nice when I gave away my old Shopvac screamer.

I also have a Fe$tool CT 26. I like it except for the price. I have a Rigid also that is far quieter than than the Shopvac brand models. You could consider one of those as a much cheaper option.

i went through the exact same process last year. The Fein was my quiet “budget” option vs the Festool. Bought it , like it and happy I did. Glad to be rid of my terribly loud Shopvac.

So, why not a simple box with a quick lock door to muffle sound? On a set of casters, it’d be easy to move about, you could knock off a lot of decibels, you could size it for future vacs, and you’d get ONE MORE HORIZONTAL SURFACE.

ive got an old-er fein vac, about 30 years probably and it’s pretty quiet, but it.s not just about the sound but the filtration the fein and festool vac’s provide.

Was curious about that, so did a quick search. It appears it’s about one micron, which is average for a good dust collector, though we’d prefer 1/2 micron. Better yet would be true HEPA filters at about .3 microns.

Anyway, it’s indicated a common vac can be bumped up.

yes any vac can be improved with better filtration, but to what level? ya gotta do some research to determine what it is you want or need.

I put a Gore clean stream on mine, but Fein sells Hepa filters.

I have a Fein Turbo II, with Hepa filter. Have had it since 2013 (if I remember correctly). It’s been so long, I’ve forgotten the cost, but it was worth every cent. I also figure, in the time I’ve had it, I would have burned through at least two, if not three, Shopvacs.

My Fein is way quieter than my Rigid screamer was, but it isn’t quiet by a long shot. I have mixed feelings about whether it was worth it. I’d have rather had a more standard shop vac wrt hose sizes and so on. Also I wish it were a little quieter yet. I actually wound up seldom using it and just use the DC hose for stuff i thought I’d use the shop vac for most of the time. I do hook it up to the router table, but the router is a screamer any way so the noise is already bad any way.
