Topic tags/keywords: retirement

Well, i was laid off early April so started my retirement about a year earlier than I had planned. My wife and I had been considering moving to the Atlanta area when I retired but I didn’t think that would be for a while yet (I have been saying “in about 2-3 years” for the last several years!). So we decided now was as good of a time as any to make the move, so we are getting the house ready to sell. I got in too big of a hurry and listed all of my bigger tools thinking they would take a while to sell, and boom! they were all gone in 2 days (I guess that I priced everything a little too low – most went the first day). So we are in the process of cleaning the house and doing various small projects to make it more attractive, but now I don’t have any of my tools (a few small tools is all). A few days ago I was repairing the base molding around our patio posts and was thinking how much neater and faster it would have been with the miter saw; oh well.

We will likely sell this house (in Austin) and move to an apartment in the Suwanee area for a while to give us time to look around and find what we need (and can afford). I have seen a few places listed with a nice workshop already and of course that would be great but we need to sell and move first, and see what is available in person. I will probably be asking for a lot of advice on building a workshop when we get farther along. I have been using our garage since I started in woodworking a few years ago, so there is a lot to learn and think about for a new workshop.

Of course nobody knows what is going to happen with the pandemic situation, so all of our moves will have to take that into consideration. Certainly no airplanes! That is going to make it hard since my wife has a problem riding in a car for stretches longer than 1-2 hours. I don’t know how we will move our belongings and 2 cars; now might be a good time to sell one. I really need a truck or SUV anyway to replace my Miata (can’t carry much wood in that!).

Well thanks for reading my rambling tale of random thoughts. Things are really in a mess right now and I am just trying to get my thoughts organized enough that I don’t go crazy. We are making lists for various categories and they are getting longer and longer.

If anybody has knowledge of the area and knows of decent apartments or houses for rent (cheap!) please let me know. We took a vacation there several years ago looking for places to retire and settled on Suwanee at that time, but things may have changed since then. My wife is Korean so somewhere close to the Duluth-Suwanee-Korea Town area would be good, but maybe there is another Korea Town now?
