Topic tags/keywords: jig resource tip question plane chisel sharpening

Happy Friday and hope everyone is keeping safe.

I was walking around Lowe’s the other day and came across what appears to be about 4 inches wide & 3/8-1/2 thick polished granite threshold (since it was at their flooring dept) that seemed flat.

But I wanted to ask the folks in this board if that is good enough to be used as a sharpening surface for chisels and plane irons.

Thanks in advance!

Sure if it had a good support. (Flat bench?)

I was going to build an additional 1/2 inch hardwood base/frame under n around it and on a workbench…so would that be ok?

Sure, I just use the jointer table usually, all my chisels and planes have been flattened so not much need anymore.

I’d use a good straight edge to double-check, but if it looked good I’d be happy to use something like that for sharpening.

I found scrap granite counter top pieces at habitat for humanity. About an inch thick, various sizes. Only polished on one side.

thanks for all the feedback. I will be making a return trip with my straight edge and feeler gauge next week.

Thanks again, and please be safe everyone!
