Topic tags/keywords: question oak design tip

I’ve been asked to make two window cornices, each 7 foot long, and to be made from oak. I’ve secured the wood, and a cornice isn’t very hard to make, but there is one concern I can’t seem to rectify in my mind, that being:
The length of a 7 food oak board, 3/4 ” X 5.5” (it’s a standard 1 X 6), will weigh close to 8.5 lbs.

I’m tossing the following around in my head as concerns to be addressed in order to do this correctly, without it falling off the wall;
- Should I incorporate a top, as I was going to simply use a open U shape to reduce weight?
- I believe I should mill the front board to 1/2” thickness, and leave the sides at 3/4”?
- I’m thinking a center bracket will be necessary, for both weight support & maintaining a flat appearance without drooping or bowing out.?

Maybe I’m over thinking this, but would greatly appreciate any thoughts or suggestions anyone my have.

Thanks,
Tom

If I put that up in my house, it would have a middle support. I don’t know if it needs it or not but it would be there

Yes, you’re over thinking it. Incorporate a top and hang it with a full length french cleat.

Tony S, you’re right, that’s the simplest and mom most secure solution, and it’ll fulfill recycle1943’s suggestion of the center support.

Thanks guys, lately my brain has been in a fog.
