Is there a way to determine the age of a framing square? I've done some cursory googling, but it's a difficult search. So far I've learned a lot about the various numbers and tables on it, but nothing about how to date it. The specific square in question came from my grandfather. It's a Sargent 3B, which appear to be the only manufacturers marks on it.
It can be a bit of an ongoing process. It's researching in old catalogs and publications to see when models where made.
Logos can be another clue. Manufacturer's often changed logos from time to time. Sometimes you can get lucky and find a publication that describes a introductory date. And sometimes it's different for different kinds of tools.
It's fairly easy to find old Sargent catalogs, either original or reprints, so that's where I would start
