I’m pretty much just ranting here but when I buy a tool that is identical to another one that I have loved for a few years and the new one is a cheaper version of the SAME EXACT thing I get quite frustrated.

My original Milwaukee 16’ auto lock tape has the nice vinyl printed scale on both sides. It has seen quite a bit of use and has glue, marker, and who knows what else on it. It is still my go to though. But lets face it tapes, pencils, bits, squares, and just about everything else in the shop has legs. They all wonder off and go have an orgy somewhere I guess.

I thought I would outsmart them and buy a second tape and leave it clipped over by my table saw and miter saw. That way it’s always there when I need it. Sure it wonders off too but my chances of finding one of the two identical tapes has just gone up by 50% right?

Anyway the new tape has a much flimsier blade and a bur on the end of the hook. That stupid burr catches on things all of the time. Yesterday it got stuck while measuring in a tight space and the jerk crimped on me while trying to dislodge it.

In the end it had a special introduction to the 12 lb sledgehammer…it was not a pleasant meeting.

The new one is probably still under warranty. You should return it for a refund!

I wonder if the warranty covers rage inducing defectiveness. If not it really should

Sounds like primal scream therapy! Did it feel good afterwards?

It really did and in more ways than one. First its a long standing tradition with my brother and I to punish tools and/or car parts that were hard to remove. If you swing a 4# sledge hard enough you can smash a brake rotor in half.

Second it took a good 5 or 6 wacks with the big sledge to get that tape to show its guts. I was quite surprised by how tough it was and felt better knowing old trusty Milwaukee is just as tough or maybe tougher

I have a feeling that if “old trusty” witnessed the blows, it will be on its best behavior from here on in.

Tools grow legs, it’s a fact of life. I have purchased a grab bag full of measuring tapes. I can find exactly one in my shop, and that’s only because I could find NONE yesterday and mentioned it to one of my sons, who said, “Oh, I have one right here. Since you have so many, I wasn’t worried about putting it back right away.” Meanwhile, where are the other three!?

As far as the “Jerk” above, that would appear to be justifiable tapicide.

I had my dust collector eat its remote through my oversight when I was cleaning. The impellor turn it into a chunky mess. Makes me wish I had gotten a chip collector I’ve thought about many times. :)
