I am curious what others think the best screws are for attaching hairpin legs to a 1 inch thick Sapele tabletop. I am thinking of using 3/4 inch #8 screws

A 3/4” screw for a 1” thick top seems reasonable. I think as long as the screw does not poke through the top you are ok—and the longer the screw is the more threads are able to grip and hold the legs to the top. Make sure to pre-drill the top to the core size of the screw.

I’m not sure what the rule is for how thick the screw should be. How does one know whether they should use a #8 or a #10? I suppose a #10 might hold better than a #8—maybe the threads are little deeper on a #10 than a #8. Just a guess.

I’ll use a 1” screw on a 1” thick board. I grind off the pointed tip to a length so I get a extra wrap of threads without worrying a tip will poke through. With predrilled hole of course to within 1/8” of drilling threw the board..

Have your say...
