I recently purchased a small portable mp3 player from Amazon and it is OK…nothing special but OK. I was very surprised to find a small card in the box that said that if I posted a 5 Star review and sent them a link that they would send me $20 by Amazon gift card or PayPal. This is clearly just a bribe for a good review.

I do not trust Amazon reviews and this is just disgusting. I wrote to Amazon to tell them about it and got the following response -

Hello,

Just great…they have a problem with paid for customer reviews and will not tell me what they are doing about it.

It makes me really trust their reviews. Of course, I never trusted them before.

I get similar requests from most any overseas purchases on Amazon.
Sellers are not allowed to offer money for reviews and they will get dropped if Amazon can confirm.

As far as reviews: I only count the number of and read the less than 3 star reviews anymore. The 4-5 star reviews can seldom be trusted, unless there are 1000’s of them. If the 1-2-3 star reviews are over 15-20% of total count, you can bet there is some sort of issue with product and need to consider purchase carefully.

Cheers!

I try to review it as I see it.I very seldom give a negative review on E bay but if the product never got shipped to me and they took my money( like 2 foreign sellers did when I ordered 6” digital calipers), they both got negative reviews and then complained to me about it !!!

I use this site Metareview. Put the amazon page’s address in it and it does a complex series of calculations regarding the reviews and tries to give you an assessment of their overall validity. A complex bunch of info but it does give you a 1-5 rating of their relative authenticity and a pass/fail in various categories.

Another point: Those items marked in a black bar as “amazon’s choice” are often not the best choice as indicated by reviewers after awhile. I don’t know why they say it’s their choice. Maybe the number of reviews, maybe it’s a payed statement.

Also, I try to purchase the stuff that has the ‘Sold and fulfilled’ by Amazon info on it. If you do then returning it for any reason at all is quick and easy and no cost. No questions asked. You may not like the color. You can say, ‘not the quality I expected’. They take it back.
