My apologies if this has been discussed anywhere, I couldn’t find anything specific to each unit. I’ve placed an order for the 634XP with the end mounted fence when this was on sale for about $2500. This was back in July, and it’s now middle of October. I’ve contacted Grizzly and first they said they were due to get more in stock on Nov, 5th 2019 but now that date has moved out to Nov, 29th. This has me worried that they are either going to discontinue or keep pushing that date out into next year. I’m really struggling with the idea of maybe cancelling my order and placing one for the 634Z model which they have in stock. Now for some reason they have a $200 price difference between the two. all I can see is the fence being different and i’m not sure why the center mounted fence would be worth $200 more than the end mounted. Any thoughts why? Secondly, lets say it is a better system is it worth the difference that I would be facing which is $2995 vs the cost I ordered at which was $2495. I’ve looked at other option, obviously Jet 12” JJP which is about $2800 but no spiral cutter. Hammer over $5K out of my budget. King Canada 12” about $2700 USD but i’m not sure I can get it here in the USA.

thanks for listening/ reading

Embargo probably has Papa down. He’s probably waiting to see what happens. If it isn’t already here, I imagine it could be a while before it is. No idea what he keeps in inventory?

When you call are they actively selling other models on hand? Or just keeping it about the machine you ordered?

When I talk to them, they keep telling me that they are sorry for the delay but they are not pushing any other machines on me. you would think they would try and sell me the G0634Z which they do have in stock but they don’t.

1) You have polar bear effect.
Grizzly has always placed a slight price premium on white/green tools, compared to green with beige accents. Personally, have never understood marketing ploy on the Polar Bear machines?
White is hard color to keep clean, yet it’s hard to tell when beige gets dirty. No one has a clean room for wood shop? :-)

2) Overseas container shipping can be frustrating.
It takes 10-12 weeks for machine tools to ship across the ocean from export to import warehouse. A small hangup in weather, customs, or trucking shortage; can easily add a couple weeks to delivery time.
If Grizzly has only pushed out date by 3 weeks, and you can confirm YOUR tool is on container ship; then the delay in delivery is reasonable event. Important thing to ask: How far down the list is your machine order? I would ask for written confirmation that they are getting enough tools to fill all open orders, and your tool is on the impending shipment, and there won’t be more delays. They may not like to do this, as if a container gets lost/damage/stolen in route, you still may have to wait for the next shipment. If they can’t commit to end of November delivery and you need it now; then you might to reconsider another machine.

3) The cast iron back fence on G0634Z increases weight by 30lbs more than the aluminum end mounted fence on G0634XP. The overall shipping weight is also 50lbs more. The cast iron fence appears to have more hardware, and be slightly more complicated. Between the cost of parts/cast iron/machining, and weight increase; can easily explain couple hundred dollar reduction on unit price with aluminum fence of XP model?

4) Never used your g0634 tool, but on standard jointers; i prefer center mounted fence. The cast iron end mounted fences on antique Delta units only secure one end (like G0634XP), and on Delta unit it’s possible to move the far end with heavy lumber and improper feeding pressure. The center mounted fences stay solid at cutter head and don’t move where it counts.
IMHO – Unless you have space limitations that prevent the extra depth on the center mounted fence; the G0634Z would be my Grizzly choice if I wanted a combo unit? YMMV

5) King Canada Tools are sold by Woodcraft. You might be able to special order one in a USA store, but you are going to wait a month for delivery even if in stock. If not available at Woodcraft, both Federated and KMS will ship many items to USA. Just note that shipping won’t be cheap unless you live in northern USA close to Canadian warehouses, plus you will have customs duty and/or tariff.
Why do think Lee Valley ships from NY and NV warehouses for US sales?

Best Luck.

Thanks CaptainKlutz for the detailed reply. I haven’t seen any evidence that the center mounted fence is cast iron and not aluminum as well. However if that’s true then your thoughts are pretty spot on for the increase in price. I have not actually gotten them to admit my purchase is on the boat yet, so i’ll push them for that information. I’m going to hold hout for a few more weeks and see if Grizzly has another Black Friday sale like they did last year that runs nearly the whole month of Nov. Then i’ll decide if it’s worth cancelling my order and buying the 634Z model. I am not that limited on space so it’s not an issue. One of the only things keeping me from buying the Jet is to get it for similar price i’d be going without the helical head, the jet head seems to be way more expensive than others i’ve seen. that and the grooved table.
Thanks again.

So I just confirmed from Grizzly that my G0634XP is due to arrive at Grizzly on Nov 11th and they will fulfill backorders first, they also confirmed that my backorder will be fulfilled with this shipment. Very happy news!
