What is the point of the screw or lag bolt going to the leg in a corner brace (in a table for example). I’ve made wooden corner braces before but only screwed them to the apron and not the leg since I was afraid to screw through the tenon.

It pulls the leg tight into the apron.

As LeeRoyMan mentions…It also keeps the legs from breaking free and becoming lose if kicked. At some point a leg becomes lose it can keep it from coming off and can be re tightened…
