Good day woodturners!

I am new to woodturning and have purchased a Grizzly 16” lathe. I have not received it yet, but in the mean time, I purchased a Nova G3 Chuck. When I received the chuck, I saw where it states that this chuck is rated for lathes up to 14” swing. Since my lathe is a 16” swing, can this chuck still be used as long as I do not exceed 14” turning projects, or do I need to send this one back and get the Supernova 2?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I believe that is correct. I am guessing you may have bought a bundle that came with a set of Cole jaws. meant to grip the outer rim of the bowl so that you can turn the bottom? That is probably what that limitation may refer to. So you should be ok, as long as the chuck is designed to fit your head stock.

The chuck will be fine with your lathe. The “limit” is so that some wild man doesn’t chuck up a huge piece of wood.
If you expect to do large items soon I would go with the SN2. The G3 will accept all the same jaws as the SN2 but is not rated for the Powergrip and 130mm. The SN2 is about two pounds heavier than to G3 to handle heavy pieces.
I have G3’s and SN2’s and use the G3’s the most.

I got that Chuck earlier this year and very happy. I am using it on my Shopsmith Mark V which is a smaller lathe.
