I saw an ad for a Herman Miller high back executive desk chair for $100. They go for over $1000 new. Could this be the deal of a lifetime or could it just be a piece of junk? The chair looks like it is all metal. If it is broken, can it be repaired easily?

MrRon – If it is truly a Herman Miller chair, not some kind of knock-off, it would be a steal depending on condition. I was looking for a used ‘Aeron’ model (Mesh seat and back) from them from time to time. Couldn’t find anything under $400 very used. They are pricey, but well worth it if one is using them for long periods. Very ergonomically designed and built to last. Back in the day I had purchased, for my job as a designer, many of them. Very top-end. If it’s real, grab it!! I personally know of about 100 of them over 20 y.o. and still kicking!

I worked for Steelcase and HM was one of our biggest competitors. They both made fine office chairs. I have 5 of the Steelcase brand at home and you can’t wear them out at home. if the HM chair is in good shape, that sounds like a deal. Check to see if it has a pneumatic lift and if the cylinder is working. if not, a replacement might be $20.

cheers, Jim
