I'm looking to buy a HVLP to spray a variety of finishes. Mainly spar varnish, I'm hoping to use it for latex and other paint also. All suggestions are welcome.
If you have an air compressor that can run the HF guns, go with one of those.
If not, look at the Earlex 6003. I use one for water based finishes, and it works great.
HVLP can spray thinned latex paint, but an airless will generally do it better and faster.
As said if you have a compressor, there are a ton of good serviceable guns you could use. HF has a few of them, and Cheeeep too.
Overall though I think that the Earlex 5500's are a great way to get into spraying. Top end product, with awesome support. I've had 2 smallish problems, and they just sent me a whole new kit each time. I don't know how you top that. They came quicker than Prime from Amazoo too.
The tool, and the company aside, they have a LOT of video at YouTube showing how to do a LOT of different things with your 5500. You don't get that with a HF spray gun. I haven't seen that with those thousands of dollar systems either, unless they tell you the secret handshake to see them when you buy.
PS: I've seen the exact same gun (same embossed model number on the gun and everything, but anodized in a different color) being sold at a couple of different auto parts stores. One had them priced at $69.99!
Would suggest looking at the YouTube video(s) about how to clean it up.
Mine was in dire need of cleaning and de-burring. About 30 minutes later, have a very nice spray gun.
Best regards,
JK
