I'm a little late posting this. I got the word almost a month ago. I guess I'm still in shock. I entered my Jean Francois Oeben inspired boxes in the Veneertech Craftsman's Challenge a few months ago and they actually won their category.
I have won honourable mention there before but actually winning a category is way beyond my wildest expectation. Needless to say, I'm very pleased. The competition was pretty steep.
I want to thank my LJ friends who have encouraged and supported me on my marquetry journey over the last (has it really been) eight years or so. Without that encouragement this certainly would not have happened.
Hi Paul,
That may come as some surprise to you that you won the award but it certainly doesn't come as a surprise to me.
I,ve admired your work for a while now and was just showing my Lovie Cheryl one of your 120 posted projects here My Cheryl was in awe as I took her through your home page. And in particular one of your boats and then the marquetry that you created of a picture of that particular boat.
I just wonder if there is any young blokes coming through with anywhere like the skills you have.
Very nice work and congratulations on the award.
Kind Regards
Anthony (Hong Kong)
Well done Paul and well deserved, exceptional classic pieces - join the trophy club. Its great to get recognition - these are a few of mine,
but I'm sure our WA Wood Show is on a far, far smaller scale than your Veneertech Craftsman's Challenge. You can get bitten by the winning bug, which is partiliy what drives me each year to make the next project, and try to come up with something that bit more special. I wouldn't want to go 'head to head' with you!!
I missed the finished post of your boxes, so good to be refered back to them …..... really exceptional. Looking forward to your next project.
Congratulations Paul. Your expertise is to be envied and deserves recognition like this. I should also mention that your willingness to share knowledge and experience with aspiring ebenistes is appreciated by many of us and also deserves recognition.
Jim
Thanks for sharing your award and the Boxes you made. these should be an inspiration to more woodworkers to what we can do with time and patience and practice. I think a lot of instruction would help also.
You shouldn't be shocked, those boxes are screamin' gorgeous! Congratulations! I was just showing those two boxes to one of my sons yesterday when he saw some marquetry in the new issue of FWW, and asked about it (marquetry in general).
Well I'm not surprised at all, but thrilled to pieces for you Paul! Eight years!! ... just look what you've achieved in such a short time, and this grand acknowledgement is well deserved. I'm pleased and honoured to say I've "rubbed shoulders" with you
