I’m currently looking to upgrade from my old Craftsman biscuit jointer add-on to either a Dewalt DW682K or Porter Cable 557. I like the PC for it’s capability to cut slots for FF biscuits, but a lot of reviews downrate due to the wide gap in the fence and the issue with the dust port plugging. Most of my newer shop tools are Dewalt (pick a brand, try to stay with it…) and I really am leaning towards the Dewalt, which actually gets higher ratings.

The question – has anyone ever used the PC 2” blade on another brand of plate jointer? The only reason I can think of it not working is if the depth of cut “throw” is greater on the PC. I know there is a setting for the 2” blade on the PC that limit’s the retraction distance, but not sure if that also affects how far out the blade mandrel moves also..

I didn’t find that the DeWalt got higher ratings. There are some shortcomings on both brands. I went with the PC. As for using the FF cutter on another brand, I doubt if it would work. You’ll be spending the (rip-off price) $60 to get the cutter and if it doesn’t work, you’re screwed.

I’ve never had my PC 557 clog, except when using the FF cutter due to the large space that’s left when it’s installed. Using a dust collector while cutting remedies that.

So I guess the tally so far is 1 “no” to my actual question..
I’m not looking for a PC versus Dewalt discussion, but rather whether anyone has ever tried that PC 2” blade on another brand of plate jointer..

If they had, you’d be able to find it online. As far as I know, it won’t work.

Well, I guess I might as well just fold my tent and go away, eh? How would I know if someone out there had had the same thought and maybe tried it if I don’t ask? Trying to find it online is what I’m trying to do, Rich.

I’ve got your opinion, let’s move on..

Interesting response and attitude to what I thought was a very helpful response to your original question.

LOL, yeah. Sorry I bothered. He’ll go far here. His signature line shows a clear lack of self-awareness.

Rich, you kicked in with a response on how great your PC was, not what the question was and no actual experience on it. I forgot that as a first tine poster (on THIS forum) I was breaking etiquette by pointing that out.. The other forums I participate in, where I’m the one with the knowledge, I try to address the question, otherwise I just move on. I joined because of the great reviews here and what I can learn. If my “attitude” turns you off, I guess we won’t have any issues in the future…..

With the number of members that this forum has, I’m hoping someone else has had the same idea and tried it.

Mr. Bum

From the Dewalt website’s FAQ

“Can the DW682 plate joiner be used with a 2” blade?

No. The smallest blade that can be used on this plate joiner is 3”.

See how easy it is to get the answer to a question, when you ask the question from a knowledgeable person (that actually comprehends what the question was)?

Tony S, I appreciate the time you took to answer. I missed that in the Dewalt FAQ. Ironic they refer you to Lamello for the 3” blade. For the record, now that I’ve got the answer, I’ll be getting the Porter Cable 557, despite numerous reviews mentioning plugging, even with dust removal in some places. I considered moving up to a Lamello, but the value is not there for my level of use.

No, Tony made a fool of you. You can’t even do a search. You also were rude to one of the most knowledgeable and helpful people on here. Rich took time to reply and you were a jerk back. My guess is he won’t be answering any more of your questions.

Your loss.

If you hook your PC 557 to a vac it won’t clog.

Thanks, Fred. Some of the many reviews I’ve read stated that depending on the type of wood, they still had jams, I’ll just have to watch. None of the 8 or so plate jointers rated by Fine Woodworking in 2015 were perfect, the Dewalt I favored apparently has QC problems with the alignment of the base plate, from other reviews.

My major concerns about the PC were the plugging issue quite often cited and the large opening in the fence, requiring the clear plastic insert if working on narrower stock. The ability to set the fence to 135 degrees and the ability to use the small FF biscuits are what won me over to the 557. As a note, one tool from PC that I finally had to replace was the corded Multi tool, that ran so hot that the bare aluminum portion of the barrel would actually burn your hand. Communication with Porter Cable about this issue was unproductive, which kind of shaded my opinion of the brand.

As a final note on my original question, I found this , which points to more than one problem with my idea.. I apologize for ruffling feathers, but still stand by my observation – I was looking for anyone that had actual experience with the proposed “kluge” or had knowledge of the differences in the two products that would prevent it from working. I’ve been using numerous forums for more than 20 years, one of the most common issues is “off the question” responses that just fill a thread..

Have your say...
