Hey guys in following up on my thread from a few weeks ago regarding treating Rough Sawn Cedar (I’m building columns that are partially covered by a soffit) -

What happens if I just stain the columns (deep walnut) but don’t do anything else? I assume they are naturally resistant to rain/snow – or am I missing something?

If you use an exterior stain intended for the purpose, it will be just fine. Although, nothing lasts forever. My whole house is sided with cedar and was stained several years ago. It has mostly held up well. Some spots need to be touched up once and a while.
